{"id":498206,"date":"2026-06-13T19:47:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T19:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/498206\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T19:47:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T19:47:13","slug":"taoiseach-acknowledges-serious-issues-around-luas-cork-route-through-gaa-and-rugby-grounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/498206\/","title":{"rendered":"Taoiseach acknowledges &#8216;serious issues&#8217; around Luas Cork route through GAA and rugby grounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin has acknowledged that two sports clubs opposing the revised \u20ac2.5bn\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41855808.html\">Luas Cork<\/a> route cutting through their grounds are facing \u201cserious issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The preferred route for the proposed 20km light rail service was published in April, refining last year\u2019s emerging preferred route with significant changes on the western end in Ballincollig and Bishopstown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Revisions to the previous route have the rail lines turning east at the northern end of Melbourn Rd, running past Bishopstown Community School, and through the grounds of Bishopstown GAA Club and Highfield RFC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Last month, Bishopstown GAA vowed to fight the plans \u201cto the very end\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Last week, Highfield Rugby Club said the preferred route presented an \u201cexistential threat\u201d to its future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Both clubs had called on members to make submissions to the public consultation process being run by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), a process that closed on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Speaking in Cork last Monday, Mr Martin said he met the officers of both clubs at the end of May \u201cfor a very considerable length of time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Serious issues\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere are serious issues for the clubs, and I encourage both clubs to continue engaging with TII in respect of the proposals.
