Only a fortnight ago, Ireland was enjoying the warmest May on record and plenty were starting to think that an unforgettable summer might be approaching.<\/p>\n
However, by June, conditions shifted dramatically. Persistent overcast skies, heavy thunderstorms and lower temperatures have prompted some to question whether that initial burst of sunshine represented the season’s peak<\/p>\n
, reports the Irish Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n Yet Met \u00c9ireann’s most recent long range outlook has provided renewed grounds for hope. It has quietly hinted that the clearest indication of above average temperatures this summer might not arrive in July or August whatsoever.<\/p>\n Rather, September is appearing as the month with the greatest likelihood of bringing warmer than typical weather, sparking hopes that Ireland could feasibly be set for a delayed period of warmth.<\/p>\n In its most recent outlook spanning July, August and September, Met \u00c9ireann stated: “The signal from the C3S seasonal models for Ireland during the July, August, September period is for above average temperatures.<\/p>\n “Mean temperatures during July, August, September are signalled to be above average overall; all three months are likely to trend between 0.5 and 1.0C above normal. The likelihood of higher-than-normal temperatures is strongest in September.”<\/p>\n The projection also indicates rainfall falling below average throughout the three month stretch. It continued: “The rainfall forecast is less certain, with a weak signal for below average rainfall overall, especially during July.”<\/p>\n Sea surface temperatures are also anticipated to stay above normal throughout this timeframe.<\/p>\n The national forecaster explained: “The sea surface temperatures around Irish coasts are expected to continue slightly above average during July, August, September, trending 0.2 to 1.0C higher than normal generally, with the highest anomalies expected off southern and eastern coasts.”<\/p>\n Met \u00c9ireann has emphasised that seasonal outlooks differ from typical weather forecasts and ought to be interpreted carefully.<\/p>\n Instead of forecasting what conditions will be like on a specific day, they’re intended to illustrate the general patterns that are more probable across a span of multiple months.<\/p>\n The national forecaster noted that a broad spectrum of possibilities remains likely and that extended-range forecasts cannot provide certainties.<\/p>\n Want to see more of the stories you love from Dublin Live?
