Elijah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins in The Hunt for Gollum, but he cautions the role is a brief cameo. The December 2027 release also brings back Ian McKellen’s Gandalf, with Andy Serkis and Lee Pace aboard, and introduces Jamie Dornan as Aragorn in place of Viggo Mortensen.

Elijah Wood is heading back to Middle-earth, but he is telling fans not to expect much Frodo this time. The Hunt for Gollum, due in December 2027, leans on familiar faces, with Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Lee Pace returning while Jamie Dornan steps in as Aragorn. Wood describes his part as closer to a cameo, a nod to Tolkien’s timeline rather than a centerpiece. It is a small stitch of nostalgia meant to frame a larger chase.

Elijah Wood returns as Frodo, briefly

The road back to Middle-earth is opening again, and it comes with a gentle caveat. Elijah Wood will step back into Frodo Baggins for the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum, but his role will be closer to a wink than a full chapter. Wood confirmed his return as a cameo, teasing a short appearance ahead of the film’s planned December 2027 US theatrical release.

A star-studded cast and new additions

The film leans on familiar gravitas and a few bold swings. Ian McKellen is set to reprise Gandalf, with Andy Serkis returning to the role he helped define as Gollum, and Lee Pace once again embodying Thranduil. The twist is up front: Jamie Dornan will play Aragorn, taking over the mantle for this story’s timeline and focus. The project is backed by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. in the US.

How Frodo fits the timeline

For anyone wondering why Frodo appears at all, the choice matches Tolkien’s chronology. The film draws from passages in The Fellowship of the Ring and the appendices, where Gollum’s pursuit and capture intersect with Aragorn and Gandalf. A brief Frodo scene can serve as a framing device, adding a thread of continuity without crowding the central hunt. Wood described it as returning to an old friend, just for a moment.

What to expect in theaters

The creative pitch seems clear: honor the textures of the original trilogy while centering a gritty chase across Wilderland. Fans are already speculating about a prologue featuring Frodo, followed by a story anchored to Aragorn’s trail and Gandalf’s counsel. With a US rollout targeted for December 2027, anticipation is building steadily, helped by the reunion of cornerstone talent and the promise of fresh paths through Middle-earth.

[27
93,61,60,270
post-498860","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-movies
["GET
