Royal watchers scrutinised every detail, from the couple’s understated arrival to the Prince of Wales taking to the driver’s seat. Yet it was a more unexpected feature inside the car that prompted intrigue: a carton of coconut water discreetly nestled in the door pocket.

Long associated with fitness enthusiasts seeking a natural hydration boost after exercise, coconut water has evolved from being a niche health-food drink to a supermarket staple. Now, it may also have found favour in royal circles.

But is the water – the clear liquid from young green coconuts – as healthy as its reputation suggests? And if you’re tempted to follow the Princess’s lead, which varieties are actually worth buying?

Why is coconut water considered healthy?1. Helps you stay hydrated

As coconut water is approximately 95 per cent water, it is “a hydrating drink that can help you hit your daily fluid requirements”, says Bini Suresh, registered dietitian and lead for dietetics at Cleveland Clinic London. “Staying well hydrated supports concentration, physical performance, temperature regulation and overall health.”

2. Aids muscle function

Unlike plain water, coconut water naturally contains electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium and sodium. “These help maintain fluid balance, muscle function and nerve signalling [how the nervous system sends chemical signals around the body],” Suresh says.

One 2021 study found that electrolyte-containing drinks may help reduce the risk of exercise-associated muscle cramps compared with plain water, particularly after heavy sweating. A 250ml serving of coconut water contains roughly 500mg of potassium, helping contribute towards the recommended daily intake of 3,500mg.

3. Supports blood pressure regulation

Potassium also plays an important role in maintaining healthy blood pressure, says Nichola Ludlam-Raine, specialist registered dietitian and author of How Not to Eat Ultra-Processed. Research suggests it helps the body excrete excess sodium and relaxes blood vessel walls, supporting normal blood pressure regulation – especially for people with hypertension and for those consuming high-sodium diets.

Many people do not consume enough potassium in the first place, making coconut water one useful dietary source, Ludlam-Raine notes.

4. May support exercise recovery

Coconut water has long been popular as a post-exercise drink. “Some studies suggest coconut water can be as effective as traditional sports drinks for rehydration after moderate exercise,” Suresh notes.

“However, it is generally lower in sodium than sports drinks, so for prolonged or intense exercise where large amounts of sweat are lost, dedicated sports drinks may still be more appropriate.”

5. Can aid weight loss

Unsweetened coconut water is generally lower in calories and sugar than many soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit juices, Suresh says. A typical 250ml serving contains around 45 calories and 7g of sugar, compared with approximately 105 calories and 27g of sugar in the same amount of Coke.

One 2022 meta-analysis linked frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages with higher body weight. As a result, replacing sugary drinks with unsweetened coconut water may help reduce overall calorie as well as lowering the amount of sugar consumed, potentially helping you to lose weight.

All eyes were on the Prince and Princess of Wales as they arrived at Peter Phillips’s wedding earlier…

[36
493,103,6714,61,60,446,4638,47792,1284,154505
post-500969","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-diet","tag-health","tag-health-and-fitness","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-nutrition","tag-princess-of-wales","tag-soft-drinks","tag-standard","tag-us-content
["GET
