A Dublin pub has been refused retention permission for a food court and sauna business that revitalised its business.<\/p>\n
The Clarke’s City Arms on Prussia Street in Stoneybatter has been home to the yard which includes three food outlets, the sauna business and seating areas since the Covid<\/a> pandemic. But while Dublin<\/a> City Council has said the use of the yard is permitted in principle, there are issues with the layout of the premises.<\/p>\n Retention use for the yard as is was described as “ad-hoc, untidy, poorly-considered layout, siting and materiality, combined with the other unauthorised covered areas and screens” by Dublin City Council<\/a> planners. But they welcomed the concept, saying it added vitality and viability to the area.<\/p>\n The outlet has been operated by the Dublin Outcasts. Vincent Clarke, the owner of the now bustling Clarke’s City Arms, had given permission to operate the business on his premises.<\/p>\n He praised the operation of the additional business in the yard, which led to a significant increase in customers at the pub. He said: “Following the Covid pandemic, my business experienced a considerable decline. The area was rather rundown and neglected, with ongoing issues related to antisocial behaviour, including the presence of drug addiction facilities in the vicinity, which contributed to these problems.<\/p>\n “The yard now offers a unique sauna experience alongside exceptional pizza and burgers. This combination has attracted a substantial increase in footfall to my bar. The boost in business has enabled me to employ an additional three staff members to meet the increased demand.”<\/p>\n The decision to refuse retention permission for the development was given by Dublin City Council on June 10.
