{"id":501434,"date":"2026-06-15T22:22:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T22:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/501434\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T22:22:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T22:22:09","slug":"interest-rates-rba-no-knight-in-shining-armour-for-mortgage-holders-as-rate-relief-remains-far-from-sight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/501434\/","title":{"rendered":"Interest rates: RBA &#8216;no knight in shining armour&#8217; for mortgage holders as rate relief remains far from sight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Borrowers can be reassured interest rates are likely to remain on hold for now, but with the inflation dragon still rampant, they should not expect the Reserve Bank to come to their rescue any time soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">During economic slowdowns, the central bank has often been the \u201cknight in shining armour\u201d for households, cutting interest rates when times are tough to give the economy a boost, HSBC chief economist Paul Bloxham said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A sluggish GDP print for the March quarter and rising unemployment suggest Australia is already in a downswing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-3mk41m-StyledText eze0guv9\">Sign up to The Nightly&#8217;s newsletters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1r9pdr5-StyledSubText eze0guv8\">Get the first look at the digital newspaper, curated daily stories and breaking headlines delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>By continuing you agree to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thenightly.com.au\/subscription-terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sevenwestmedia.com.au\/privacy-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">But while he predicted no more hikes from the Reserve Bank this cycle, mortgage holders were unlikely to receive any rate relief until at least 2027, Mr Bloxham said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The board should take a lesson from 2025, when it cut interest rates three times as inflation was still coming down, and not turn its back on the inflation dragon until it is sufficiently tamed, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe expect the board to judge that now is the time to pause, but that the fight may not be over yet,\u201d Mr Bloxham wrote in a research note.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThe knight will need to remain armed and vigilant. No returning with good news of a slayed dragon and cutting the cash rate quite yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Financial markets agreed with the vast majority of economists that the Reserve Bank would hold the cash rate steady at 4.35 per cent on Tuesday, but were pricing in about a one-in-two chance of one more rate rise in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Since the last meeting, underlying inflation had been less worrying than feared, growth had been subdued and the federal budget had further weighed on sentiment, IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">With markets assured of a hold, attention would instead turn to the tone of the board\u2019s accompanying statement and governor Michele Bullock\u2019s press conference for any hints around the likelihood of further tightening, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Even with a hold, borrowers with a $1 million mortgage would be paying about $450 more per month in interest payments compared to February, before the Reserve Bank\u2019s hiking cycle began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Businesses were also feeling the pressure, with late payments at a six-year high, CreditorWatch chief economist Ivan Colhoun said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">An \u201cirresponsibly large\u201d increase to minimum and award wages by the Fair Work Commission since the last meeting would further ramp up cost pressures on employers and complicate the Reserve Bank\u2019s fight against inflation, he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Borrowers can be reassured interest rates are likely to remain on hold for now, but with the inflation&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":501435,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[72,113,61,60],"class_list":["post-501434","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-economy","tag-ie","tag-ireland"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/501434","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=501434"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/501434\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/501435"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=501434"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=501434"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=501434"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
