Later this summer, Mike D will become the first Beastie Boy to release a solo album. Fifteen years after the Beasties dropped Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, their final album, Mike will hit us with Thank You, the new LP that he recorded under the name Mike D 5D. Even before he started dropping singles, Mike D went viral for performing Beasties classics with Very Nice Person, the band led by his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond. They’ve been playing smaller shows for the past month or so. Over the weekend, Mike and his sons made their TV debut on the BBC institution Later… With Jools Holland.

It’s been fun to see cell phone footage and Mike D and his sons playing live, but this is our first chance to see a pro recording of them at work. On Jools Holland, Mike D and his sons and collaborators played the singles “Switch Up” and “What We Got.” Just like the Hello Nasty-era Beasties, they rocked matching tracksuits. Mike D, now 60, brought a whole lot of energy and stage presence to the performances, and it’s lovely to see him jump back into the game like that. Watch the performances and Mike’s interview with Jools Holland below.

As it happens, today is the 30th anniversary of the Beastie Boys’ first Tibetan Freedom Concert. Look at that lineup!
