{"id":502397,"date":"2026-06-16T11:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T11:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/502397\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T11:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T11:34:07","slug":"oil-isnt-likely-to-fall-lower-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/502397\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil isn&#8217;t likely to fall lower for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oil prices continued their downward trend today, albeit at a slower pace.<\/p>\n<p>After tumbling 5% on Monday, Brent crude benchmark is trading at $82.72 a barrel, bringing it to the lowest levels since early March.<\/p>\n<p>Markets are now accounting for supply increase when the Strait of Hormuz reopens as part of the announced US-Iran peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>One fifth of the global oil shipment was passing through the vital waterway before the war.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t expect the oil prices to be plunging lower at this moment in time,&#8221; market analyst Paul Sommerville told RT\u00c9&#8217;s Morning Ireland programme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brent is trading at around $83. If it went below $80, that would be quite a surprise at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The expert explains that markets are looking at several other things besides the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz &#8211; most importantly China replenishing its oil inventories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the things that has been capping oil prices is the Chinese demand. Please review their details and accept them to load the content.<a class=\"blocked-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/business\/2026\/0616\/1578678-sommerville-markets-iran\/javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"OneTrust.ToggleInfoDisplay()\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manage Preferences<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to today&#8217;s figures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/business\/2026\/0616\/1578648-china-retail-sales-fell-in-may-for-first-time-since-2022\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China&#8217;s retail sales fell last month for the first time in more than three years <\/a>&#8211; 0.6% year-on-year drop in May.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Chinese economy is not doing particularly well, and that is putting downward pressure on oil prices,&#8221; Mr Sommerville added.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at the over three months of the war and its impact on the global economy, the analyst argued that &#8220;stock markets are doing very well because they&#8217;re looking at other things&#8221; &#8211; particularly the &#8220;AI revolution&#8221; and blockbuster debuts like SpaceX&#8217;s IPO.<\/p>\n<p>Markets &#8220;are not focused on the war because we know that Donald Trump has lost his appetite completely for the war&#8221;, Mr Sommerville said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Oil prices continued their downward trend today, albeit at a slower pace.
