Pulp<\/a> have announced a new film and live album, What Do You Do For An Encore?, directed by Garth Jennings. Read all about it exclusively on NME below.<\/p>\n

The \u201ckinetic\u201d 90-minute movie charts the Sheffield band\u2019s \u201cextraordinary journey from obscurity to cultural touchstone\u201d, with narration coming from frontman Jarvis Cocker<\/a>. It is set for release this autumn via global distributor MUBI\u2019s streaming platform.<\/p>\n

What Do You Do For An Encore? is said to capture the spirit of the classic Talking Heads<\/a> concert film Stop Making Sense<\/a> (1984) and The Band<\/a>\u2018s Martin Scorsese-directed performance movie The Last Waltz<\/a> (1978).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt fuses the brilliantly choreographed stage spectacle of Pulp\u2019s biggest ever arena show \u2013 part of the global tour<\/a> for \u2018More\u2019<\/a>, the band\u2019s first album in 24 years \u2013 with four decades of colourful, never-seen-before archival material,\u201d a description adds.<\/p>\n

The feature-length project contains 20 songs, including hits and deep cuts, and serves as Pulp and Jennings\u2019 \u201cspectacular answer\u201d to the question: \u201cWhat do you do for an encore?\u201d<\/p>\n

What Do You Do For An Encore? is \u201ca vibrant tribute to a band of brilliant misfits, whose unique blend of irony, rebellion, and razor-sharp social commentary resonated with generations of listeners and helped define an era of British culture\u201d.<\/p>\n

Director, screenwriter and actor Jennings previously helmed the music videos for Pulp\u2019s 1997 single \u2018Help The Aged\u2019 and 1988\u2019s \u2018A Little Soul\u2019 through his co-owned production company Hammer & Tongs.<\/p>\n

He has also created videos Blur<\/a>, Radiohead<\/a>, Beck<\/a>, R.E.M.<\/a>, Fatboy Slim<\/a> and Vampire Weekend<\/a>. Jennings directed the 2005 sci-fi film The Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide To The Galaxy, and wrote and directed the 2007 comedy Son Of Rambow, and animated movies Sing and Sing 2.<\/p>\n

The band has also announced the album \u2018Live!\u2019 capturing their two sold-out shows at The O2 in London in June 2025. \u201cA concert is an event where songs come back to life,\u201d Cocker added. \u201cThat\u2019s why this album is called \u2018Live!\u2019 It\u2019s both a statement of fact (it\u2019s a recording of a live band) and a challenge (come on! What Do You Do For An Encore? is a MUBI Production, and was edited by Barney Pilling (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris).<\/p>\n

The film is produced by Octavia Peissel (Asteroid City, The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar) for Opal Films, Danny Gabai and Amy Rattray for VICE Studios, and Paul Dugdale. Executive producers are Stuart Goldstein, Tom Healy and Rosie Taylor (VICE Studios); Harper Simon and Mark Sainsbury; Jarvis Cocker and Jeanette Lee.<\/p>\n

An exact release date for Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore? has not yet been confirmed. \u2018Live!\u2019 will be released via Rough Trade on August 28.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Pulp are set to play \u2018More\u2019 in full when they headline London\u2019s Royal Festival Hall next month<\/a> to celebrate 50 years of Rough Trade. They\u2019ll also treat the crowd to some classic fan favourites from their catalogue.<\/p>\n

Cocker and co. are then scheduled to play their \u201conly major UK headline concert\u201d at Manchester\u2019s Wythenshawe Park<\/a> on August 28, before topping the bill at End Of The Road 2026<\/a>. In February, Pulp shared the new track \u2018Begging For Change\u2019<\/a> from the star-studded \u2018Help(2)\u2019 charity album for War Child<\/a>. They later digitally released an EP featuring two new songs<\/a>, \u2018Marrying For Love\u2019 and \u2018Cold Call On The Hotline\u2019.<\/p>\n

The frontman had teased last November that Pulp \u201cmight write some more songs\u201d together<\/a>. The update came after his bandmates\u00a0Nick Banks and Candida Doyle told\u00a0NME\u00a0that they were \u201cnot itching\u201d to make another new album<\/a>. \u201cAn EP, maybe, or a single,\u201d Doyle added.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0NME\u00a0asked Cocker last summer if fans could expect a follow-up to \u2018More\u2019<\/a>, he replied: \u201cMaybe. We tried to not have a concept for this record or think, \u2018This is it, this is our last gas\u2019. I used to think that a lot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had this weird thing that when an album was mixed and finished where I\u2019d think, \u2018Oh, I can die now and it would be OK\u2019. That\u2019s a terrible way to think about your life, really. I didn\u2019t feel that with this record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last summer, Pulp played a surprise set at Glastonbury under the cryptic moniker \u2018Patchwork\u2019<\/a>. In a glowing five-star review of the show<\/a>, NME wrote: \u201cWith songs for the mis-shapes, a whole lotta \u2018L-O-V-E\u2019 and even\u00a0a Red Arrows fly-past for the glorious crowd-engulfing \u2018Common People<\/a>\u2019, these legends capture the spirit of these hallowed grounds with a little peace, love and joyous wonky-pop hedonism.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne for the books? Sure, but as Cocker puts it: \u2018History and stuff like that doesn\u2019t matter because it\u2019s all about now and what we can do right now\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

NME gave \u2018More\u2019 a four-star review<\/a>, hailing it as \u201ca mature but vital response to the second summer of Britpop\u201d.<\/p>\n
