Of course, they will travel to Thurles believing they can cause one of the shocks of the championship, but realism also has to play a part. Cork arrive as one of the genuine All-Ireland contenders, while Offaly are still in the early stages of rebuilding themselves as a top-tier county.

The first objective for Offaly has to be performance.

If they leave Semple Stadium having emptied the tank, competed physically for 70-plus minutes and made Cork work desperately hard for every score, then they can hold their heads high regardless of the final margin.

The biggest lesson they should take comes from watching what happened Dublin against Galway in the Leinster final. Dublin tried to engage Galway in a relatively open contest, were exposed defensively and conceded goals at critical moments.

Galway’s pace, movement and finishing power punished every mistake. Cork possess many of the same attacking qualities and Offaly cannot afford to play into their hands.

The opening 15 minutes will be absolutely critical.

<img decoding="async" alt="24 May 2026; David Nally of Offaly during the Leinster GAA Senior Hurling Championship Round 5 match between Kildare and Offaly at Cedral St Conleth's Park in Newbridge, Kildare. Cork thrive when they get momentum. Their half-forward line pushes high, their running game gathers pace and suddenly a five-point game becomes a ten-point game very quickly.

Offaly’s primary defensive objective must be to protect the scoring zone in front of goal and force Cork to take points rather than create goal chances.

That means setting up appropriately.

Going man-to-man across the entire field would be hugely risky. Cork’s forwards are too mobile and too comfortable in one-on-one situations. Offaly need a defensive structure that keeps bodies around the danger area, limits space for runners and forces Cork to shoot from less favourable positions.

There is often a temptation for underdogs to prove they can match the favourites physically by going toe-to-toe all over the field. That approach might satisfy supporters for ten minutes, but over 70 minutes it can be a recipe for disaster. Offaly need discipline more than heroics.

If they can still be within six or seven points entering the final quarter, pressure starts to shift. Cork will be expected to win. Offaly have nothing to lose. That is the position they must aim for.

Ultimately, a competitive display, no collapse, no concession of cheap goals and evidence that they belong at this level would represent genuine progress for the Faithful County.

Will The Real Dublin Please Stand Up?

Dublin’s season has been one of the strangest in recent memory.

Throughout the Leinster round-robin campaign they looked organised, energetic and increasingly confident under Niall Ó Ceallacháin. They reached the Leinster final on merit and have produced some of their most consistent hurling in years. Yet when the biggest provincial game arrived, Galway dismantled them. Dublin’s defensive structure fell apart and the game was effectively over as a contest long before the final whistle.

So which Dublin are we getting against Clare this weekend?

The evidence suggests there is still plenty of reason for Dublin supporters to be optimistic.

Firstly, this team has improved significantly over the past 18 months. They reached the Allianz League Division 1B final against Clare earlier this year and have shown a much greater attacking threat than previous Dublin teams. The return of the experienced Liam Rushe and the continued development of younger players has shown strides have been made this year in their style of play.

Clare’s Munster campaign was inconsistent and they have shown defensive vulnerabilities at times.

The challenge for Dublin is whether they can reproduce their Leinster round-robin form outside of Dublin.

<img decoding="async" alt="6 June 2026; Jason Rabbitte of Galway wins possession during the Leinster GAA Senior Hurling Championship final match between Galway and Dublin at Croke Park in Dublin. Scoring averages generally drop away from home. Goal chances become less frequent. Defensive errors tend to increase under sustained pressure. Momentum swings often go against them in hostile environments.

Clare, meanwhile, are extremely comfortable in Thurles and Munster venues generally.

That is why many will make Clare favourites despite Dublin’s strong Leinster campaign. The concern is not whether Dublin can produce one excellent performance. They have already done that several times this year. The concern is whether they can produce it away from home against elite opposition.

So what do Dublin need to do?

First and foremost they need to avoid conceding goals and maintain the defensive discipline that deserted them against Galway. For me, going man-on-man just doesn’t work for them against the top teams like Galway this year and Cork last year. They need to swallow their pride and get extra bodies back. If they keep the score close coming into 60 minutes they have every chance.

However, if the version of Dublin we saw against Galway appears again Clare will punish them severely.

Sunday feels like a defining game for this Dublin group.

For months they have been praised for their progress. Now comes the ultimate test. If they can beat Clare in Thurles and reach an All-Ireland semi-final, the narrative changes completely.

If they suffer another heavy defeat away from home, questions will remain about whether Dublin’s improvement is genuine or whether they are still a team that performs well in the Leinster round-robin but struggles when the championship heat reaches its highest level.

What Is a Good Result for Offaly Against Cork?
