A teenager accused of murdering 44-year-old postman Barry Daly said he only carried a golf club for his protection and told garda\u00ed: \u201cIt was just to give him a fright, to scare him. I didn\u2019t plan to use it or nothing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The 17-year-old who admits manslaughter but denies murder told garda\u00ed that Barry Daly was only struck once and that that was by 20-year-old Alex Deady.<\/p>\n
The 17-year-old said he went to Barry Daly\u2019s in the early hours of October 12, 2025, with Alex Deady of Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, County Cork. Both of these accused pleaded not guilty to murdering Barry Daly at Rockview Terrace in Doneraile on October 12, 2025, but guilty to manslaughter.<\/p>\n
A 16-year-old simply pleaded not guilty to murder. The ages relate to the date of the incident.<\/p>\n
Today is day 10 of the murder trial before Ms Justice Siobh\u00e1n Lankford and a jury of seven women and five men at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.<\/p>\n
Describing to garda\u00ed what he said occurred in the front garden of Barry Daly\u2019s house, the 17-year-old said: \u201cAs I was going through, Barry jumped out and swung for me. I kind of tried to dodge it. Alex just hit him and we ran. I didn\u2019t know what to do, I was scared. I got a golf club for protection, there was no intention from anyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was an iron. He (the deceased) threw a punch. I moved out of the way. I dodged. Alex hit him once, he fell,\u201d the teenager said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked what Alex hit him with, he replied: \u201cI think it was a golfclub, it could have been a punch.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked: \u201cDid you and Alex have a golfclub each?\u201d he replied: \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Further memos of garda interviews with Alex Deady were also read to the jury. Describing the single blow he said he gave the deceased, Alex Deady said: \u201cIt was a tip, it wasn\u2019t a big swing.\u201d Asked about not wearing a top when he went up to Barry Daly\u2019s he said that it had been ripped off him.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid anyone else strike Barry with the golfclub?\u201d Alex replied: \u201cNo, just me, it was only once I\u2019m sure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
From other witnesses who described meeting with Alex later that morning after the incident at Barry Daly\u2019s house, it was put to the 20-year-old: \u201cYou told people Barry was KO-ed. You were in the house talking about a hurling match and drinking a can of Heineken when Barry had died.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Alex replied: \u201cI didn\u2019t know that\u2026 I did not mean to kill him. I am so sorry for it\u2026 (when he left) he (Barry) was talking, he was talking, saying f*** you, you knacker.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed put it to him: \u201cThe post-mortem said his jaw was totally smashed.\u201d Alex replied: \u201cHe was talking, he was.\u201d Asked by the garda\u00ed: \u201cWhy is he dead and his kids without a father?\u201d Alex replied: \u201cBecause of me. I didn\u2019t want to kill him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He was asked: \u201cWhat do you think would happen if you hit someone in the head with a golf club?\u201d<\/p>\n
He replied, \u201cHe was only hit once.\u201d<\/p>\n
The garda\u00ed said: \u201cThe post-mortem said otherwise \u2013 more than one strike with a weapon.\u201d Alex said: \u201cYou are trying to put stuff in my head.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked: \u201cDid anyone else hit Barry Daly?\u201d Alex replied, \u201cNo.\u201d Garda\u00ed said, \u201cYou were hellbent on causing serious injury to Barry Daly?\u201d He replied: \u201cNo I was not.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked about \u2018leaving him for dead\u2019, he said: \u201cI did not leave him for dead, he was moving.\u201d Garda\u00ed said: \u201cYou went back to a house for a party leaving him for dead.\u201d He replied: \u201cI didn\u2019t know he was dead. I obviously didn\u2019t want him to die.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the course of the interviews with the 17-year-old he was asked a number of times how many of them went up to Barry Daly\u2019s house he said there were two. When shown CCTV of himself and Alex and a third male going in that direction, he was asked again and he said there were three in the video but he said he did not know who the third person was, saying: \u201cI remember only me and Alex.\u201d Asked if there was a reason why he did not want to name the third person he said he just did not know him.<\/p>\n
In a later interview he named the 16-year-old.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed returned to this during another interview: \u201cYesterday you said you didn\u2019t know the third person. That changed.\u201d The 17-year-old said: \u201cIn the first interview I left (name of 16-year-old) out.\u201d He went on to tell garda\u00ed that the 16-year-old phoned him to say that he had been told that Alex was in a fight in Doneraile.<\/p>\n
