A member of the public tried to restrain an abusive man in Cork city who then fled as garda\u00ed approached. The man was quickly arrested.<\/p>\n
Patrick O\u2019Sullivan, aged 34, of Cork Simon Community, has now been jailed for a month at Cork District Court for engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour.<\/p>\n
Sergeant Gear\u00f3id Davis said that, at lunchtime on June 13, 2025, O\u2019Sullivan went into Aldi in Blackpool and stole six bottles of alcohol, valued at a total of \u20ac195.<\/p>\n
He was stopped by security staff outside, and the goods were recovered.<\/p>\n
More recently, on the afternoon of June 5 at Carroll\u2019s Quay, Cork, O\u2019Sullivan was screaming and shouting at people passing on the street.<\/p>\n
Sgt Davis said the accused was restrained by a member of the public, but he fled as soon as he saw garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n
He was arrested a short distance away, and he had to be handcuffed.<\/p>\n
He was charged with being threatening and abusive, along with being so intoxicated that he was a danger to himself or others.<\/p>\n
Sgt Davis said the accused had 42 previous convictions, including three for threatening behaviour and 14 for theft.<\/p>\n
Eddie Burke, solicitor, said: \u201cHe is 34. He is originally from Bantry, and left school at 16. He went to London and later to Australia, and returned in 2015.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 2018, he came to Cork city and fell foul of drug addiction. He had been working very well in relation to that addiction and got involved in a lot of petty thefts. He apologises to the public and to the garda\u00ed for his behaviour on Saturday [June 5]. He has been in custody since then.\u201d<\/p>\n
