\n\tA lot of people online haven\u2019t been riding with Charli xcx<\/a>\u2018s pivot away from breakout album Brat \u2014 with the backlash pertaining in particular to her recent lyrical declaration that dance<\/a> music is \u201cdead\u201d \u2014 and in a new interview, the pop star was candid about how it\u2019s been affecting her mentally.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn her Rolling Stone<\/a> cover story published Thursday (June 18), Charli started by addressing the negative response to parts of her May single, \u201cRock Music.\u201d On the experimental track, she sings, \u201cI think the dance floor is dead\/ So now we\u2019re making rock music.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat lyric is very much about my relationship with Brat,\u201d she explained. \u201cMy husband [George Daniel] runs a dance-music label. There\u2019s been such a wealth of incredible dance\/electronic-adjacent records that have been coming out recently, whether it\u2019s Slayyyter or Underscores or PinkPantheress. Dance music is in an incredible place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer response comes after a chunk of the internet took her lyric seriously and pushed back on her assessment of the state of the genre. In its modern, hyperpop evolution, Charli has been a dance-music pioneer \u2014 but fans of artists such as Harry Styles or Demi Lovato, who\u2019ve pivoted to dance music in the past year, have questioned the Moment star\u2019s authority to make such a declaration. Even Madonna appeared to subtly shade Charli, writing on Instagram<\/a> in May, \u201cIf your Dance floor feels dead, maybe you\u2019re playing the wrong music.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut as Charli has explained, the line on \u201cRock Music\u201d was only ever about her \u201cpersonal experience\u201d with the Brat era and how it recently came to an end. \u201cThe discourse is loud, and sometimes that can be very overwhelming,\u201d she told Rolling Stone of the chatter about her, which she says has contributed to a difficult time for her mentally.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI am finding it tough to \u2026 I don\u2019t know,\u201d she continued. \u201cI\u2019m finding my emotions are very, very volatile at the minute, I\u2019ll be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s gotten to a point that the musician says she\u2019s taken a step back from the internet, noting that she\u2019s not interested in explaining her songs or lyrics any further \u201cbecause it got to a place where my anxiety was physically affecting me, and I can\u2019t actually proceed in life like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t really look [online] as much anymore,\u201d added Charli, who\u2019s now gearing up to release new album Music, Fashion, Film on July 24. \u201cIt\u2019s just better for my brain. I know people probably won\u2019t believe me, because I am inherently, at least in the past, a very online artist. But I recently have been really struggling with my mental health<\/a> to the point where, if I\u2019m being real, I\u2019m in the worst place mentally that I\u2019ve been in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
