Supergirl opens in theaters on June 26, and ahead of its release, film critics have shared their first reactions to the Craig Gillespie-directed film on social media.<\/p>\n
Starring Millie Alcock as the titular character in the DC Studios film following her cameo in last summer\u2019s Superman. The film features Jason Momoa as Lobo with David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman.<\/p>\n

Chris Killian of Comicbook.com posted on X<\/a> that \u201cif you threw [Guardians of the Galaxy], True Grit, and Mad Max into a DC blender, you\u2019d get Supergirl \u2014 a grimy, funny, yet surprisingly somber space adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n The comic book expert noted and gave props to Alcock, \u201cespecially when we get into Kara\u2019s tragic backstory,\u201d and added that Jason Momoa as Lobo looks to be \u201chaving the fraggin\u2019 time of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n Killian made mention of the practical effects in the film and highlighted why David Corenswet as Superman was \u201cpeak casting,\u201d adding<\/a>, \u201cEvery time he\u2019s on screen, you can\u2019t help but smile.\u201d<\/p>\n Movie critic Tessa Smith took to social media to share her hot take on the superhero film<\/a>, sharing on X that it was a \u201cmixed bag\u201d for her, adding, \u201cAs a fan of the comic, I was (perhaps) overly excited for the film adaptation. While Jason Momoa\u2019s Lobo & Milly Alcock shine, some adaptation choices and a bland villain keep it from greatness. It\u2019s, simply put, just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n Erik Davis compared\u00a0Supergirl\u00a0to a mix of \u201cthe underdog rock n\u2019 roll attitude of\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy\u201d and Mad Max\u2019s \u201cgrimy ruthlessness.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a film about fighting for those who show up for us, and as clich\u00e9 as it sounds, it also reinforces the idea that home is where the heart is,\u201d Davis posted on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n On Alcock, Davis said Alcock \u201cbrings a sort of aloofness and melancholy to the role that helps create emotional depth,\u201d while \u201cMomoa\u2019s Lobo is used just enough that you\u2019re satisfied but also want to see more.\u201d The journalist also echoed Corenswet being \u201cthe perfect choice to portray\u201d Superman.<\/p>\n John Nguyen of Nerd Reactor said on X<\/a> that Supergirl \u201cfelt bland, and I left wishing she had been given stronger material to show what she can really do.\u201d<\/p>\n Germain Lussier commented on X<\/a> that although Supergirl is \u201chighly enjoyable,\u201d it doesn\u2019t \u201chave the resonance of Superman,\u201d adding, \u201cit acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships. It\u2019s also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder.\u201d<\/p>\n Total Film\u2019s Fay Watson shared on X<\/a> that Supergirl \u201cis the film I wish I\u2019d had as a teenager who loved superhero movies. Milly Alcock is perfect, bringing humour, heart, and incredible drunk acting. Really loved Craig Gillespie\u2019s vision of this world.
