{"id":510101,"date":"2026-06-20T20:01:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T20:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/510101\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T20:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T20:01:13","slug":"call-for-cork-county-council-to-tackle-rogue-hgv-drivers-parking-in-villages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/510101\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Cork County Council to tackle rogue HGV drivers parking in villages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41861799.html\">Cork County Council<\/a> solicitors are being asked to examine what legislation could be used to prevent rogue HGV drivers from parking vehicles for days at a time in villages and creating road safety hazards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While several villages face similar issues, a particular problem has been highlighted in Rathcormac, near Fermoy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Independent councillor William O\u2019Leary, who lives in the village, said residents are \u201csick of it\u201d and claimed that \u201csome haulage companies are using the village as their own personal parking areas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ve tried to engage with them, but we\u2019re not getting much positive feedback. People have had enough of it. Maybe it\u2019s the location of the place as it\u2019s just off the M8,\u201d Mr O\u2019Leary added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He said prolonged parking of such vehicles is creating significant safety concerns because motorists cannot see pedestrians crossing from behind them due to views being obstructed by the lorries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr O\u2019Leary asked officials attending a meeting of Fermoy Municipal District Council to address the issue. He said that while the council could use footpath build-outs to prevent lorries from parking on hard shoulders, such measures would be costly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Introducing by-laws<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead, he suggested introducing by-laws to tackle what he described as a growing problem in villages across the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr O\u2019Leary, who works for a haulage company, said he had contacted garda\u00ed at the request of residents and was told the matter fell within the council\u2019s remit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ve buses and lorries parking for days on end and creating an unsafe environment. This issue has been raised by locals a number of times. All village and towns need bylaws for this. We have to stop it,\u201d Aontu councillor Peter O\u2019Donoghue said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Council engineers acknowledged there was a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They said they would consult with the county solicitor\u2019s office and the council\u2019s roads directorate in an effort to identify a solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Potential dangers<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, concerns were also raised about motorists repeatedly parking in a designated school pick-up and drop-off area in the nearby village of Ballyhooly, creating potential dangers for children travelling to and from the local national school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Fianna F\u00e1il councillor Frank O\u2019Flynn said the school bus driver had reported being unable to park in the designated area on an almost daily basis and that parents, teachers and school staff were concerned about children&#8217;s safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr O\u2019Flynn said there were inherent dangers because the busy N72 passes directly by the school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPeople should act properly and respect others who are more vulnerable,\u201d Municipal District Council chairwoman, Fine Gael councillor Kay Dawson, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Council engineers said they had referred the matter to the National Roads Design Office (NRDO) for review.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cork County Council solicitors are being asked to examine what legislation could be used to prevent rogue HGV&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":510102,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[79,63,61,60,43],"class_list":["post-510101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-cork-news","tag-cork-county-council","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/510101","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=510101"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/510101\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/510102"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=510101"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=510101"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=510101"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
