{"id":510176,"date":"2026-06-20T21:14:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T21:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/510176\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T21:14:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T21:14:14","slug":"cork-woman-driving-illegally-needed-to-get-medication-for-husband-court-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/510176\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork woman driving illegally needed to get medication for husband, court told"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A Cork woman who was caught driving without a licence or insurance did so because she needed to get medication for her sick husband, the district court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sergeant Tom Mulcahy told Clonakilty District Court that Winnie Maughan, aged 54, of John O\u2019Sullivan Place, Cahermore, Rosscarbery, was the driver of a Nissan Qashqai car that was stopped at Emmet Square, Clonakilty, at 2.30pm on December 8, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The car did not have a valid displayed insurance disc and Maughan did not have a driving licence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">She was asked to produce the documents at a Garda station, but failed to do so and later admitted by phone that she did not have a valid driving licence and that she was not insured to drive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The court was told that Maughan had two previous convictions, from 2008: One for theft and one for criminal damage, which were taken in to consideration at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Conrad Murphy, defending, said the mother of eight had lost one child and that her husband was not well and that she acted as his full-time carer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He said that on the day in question, Maughan had driven her husband\u2019s car to Clonakilty to get medication for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He said she was pleading guilty and \u201cwould not be driving again\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">For driving without insurance, Judge Andrew Cody disqualified Maughan from driving for two years and fined her \u20ac300, allowing six months to pay the fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">She was also fined \u20ac200 for driving without a licence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Cork woman who was caught driving without a licence or insurance did so because she needed to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":510177,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2246,79,54,61,60,43],"class_list":["post-510176","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-cork-court","tag-cork-news","tag-courts","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/510176","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=510176"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/510176\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/510177"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=510176"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=510176"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=510176"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
