An NCAD student has used AI to create a storytelling robot inspired by the seanchaí – traditional Irish storytellers – he grew up listening to.

Nathan Costello, from Camp, Co Kerry, created his robot ‘Cian’ to be an oral archive of the Dingle Peninsula that people can hear stories from and tell stories to.

“I don’t see this as replacing someone, it’s its own other thing,” Nathan told RTÉ News.

“I think, over time, people would see the value in you being able to access an oral bank of stories, because so many stories are not written down. It’s important to have these traditional stories somewhere you can go.”

To build Cian’s catalogue, Nathan input stories he found on Dúchas.ie – the Irish National Folklore Collection, and brought the robot to towns and villages on the Dingle Peninsula to hear from people living there.

One of the people Nathan met with was seanchaí Brian Caball.

“He really told such evocative beautiful stories that were all about the area and have been passed on to him,” Nathan said.

“Brian was totally open to it. He thinks the more ways you can hear a story, the better. His approach was: ‘I’m open to it, once you yourself, as a designer, are coming to this with care and consideration for the community and for the art form’.”

Nathan thinks his robot seanchaí is something that could be expanded upon and placed in communities around Ireland.

“I definitely think the values of each community would have to be reflected in it, and it could even go into a college or a school or other matter of communities, but it would have to be scaled up carefully with people who want it,” he said.

“In this age, where everything is globalised and everything can be found online, I think it’s quite nice to have technology that is rooted in a place, and just for that one place.”

An NCAD student has used AI to create a storytelling robot inspired by the seanchaí – traditional Irish…

[20
220,218,219,61,60,80
post-510809","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-artificial-intelligence","tag-ai","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-artificialintelligence","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-technology
["GET
