\u201cI\u2019m not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days,\u201d she began, acknowledging that Watson, 35, and Radcliffe, 36, \u201chave every right to embrace gender identity ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever,\u201d she continued, \u201cEmma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right \u2014 nay, obligation \u2014 to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rowling admitted that it\u2019s \u201chard to shake certain perspectives\u201d when \u201cyou\u2019ve known people since they were ten years old,\u201d confessing that \u2014 \u201cuntil quite recently\u201d \u2014 she found it difficult to \u201cthrow off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowling noted that the actress will \u201cnever need a homeless shelter\u201d and is \u201cnever going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward\u201d before pointing out that \u201cher \u2018public bathroom\u2019 is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door.\u201d<\/p>\n
The author went on to ask rhetorical questions: \u201cHas she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who\u2019s identified into the women\u2019s prison?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowling then turned her sights to Watson\u2019s recent appearance on the \u201cOn Purpose\u201d podcast, during which the actress told host Jay Shetty, \u201cI really don\u2019t believe that by having had that experience [in \u2018Harry Potter\u2019] and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can\u2019t and don\u2019t treasure [Rowling] and the person that I had personal experiences with.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rowling called the comments ironic and opined that the \u201cchange of tack\u201d is because Watson \u201cnoticed full-throated condemnation of [Rowling] is no longer quite as fashionable as it was.\u201d<\/p>\n
