Two men have appeared in court in relation to public order incidents in Letterkenny over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Gerard Casey, aged 22, and of Ard Logan, Letterkenny and Sean McCaughan, a 43-year-old with an address off Mayo Drive, Ballycastle, Co Antrim, were brought before Judge Emile Daly at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Casey was charged that on June 21, 2026 at High Road, Letterkenny, he engaged in threatening, abusive or insulting words of behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or being reckless as to whether a breach of the peace might have been occasions.<\/p>\n

The charge is contrary to section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 as amended by section 22 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2008<\/p>\n

A charge of being intoxicated in a public place was struck out in light of a guilty plea.<\/p>\n

Judge Daly fined Casey \u20ac300 and gave him four months to pay.<\/p>\n

McCaughan was charged with offences on June 20, 2026 at Port Road, Letterkenny.<\/p>\n

He was charged that he engaged in threatening, abusive or insulting words of behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or being reckless as to whether a breach of the peace might have been occasions.<\/p>\n

McCaughan was also charged with failing to provide his address to a member of An Garda Siochana after a lawful demand was made. That charge is contrary to section 24 (3) and (4) of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994 as amended by the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2008.<\/p>\n

A charge of being intoxicated in a public place was struck out in light of the guilty pleas.<\/p>\n

McCaughan was fined a total of \u20ac400 and given four months to pay.<\/p>\n

Neither man was legally represented in court due to the action being taken by criminal defence solicitors across the country.<\/p>\n

Solicitors have halted their legal-aid work in opposition to proposed reforms of the criminal legal aid system by the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n
