{"id":513288,"date":"2026-06-22T21:47:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T21:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/513288\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T21:47:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T21:47:22","slug":"artist-vincent-fantauzzos-chapel-street-south-yarra-gallery-shuts-its-doors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/513288\/","title":{"rendered":"Artist Vincent Fantauzzo\u2019s Chapel Street, South Yarra, gallery shuts its doors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Save<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-d1b14060-4 JmUoF\">You have reached your maximum number of saved items.<\/p>\n<p>Remove items from your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/goodfood\/saved\" class=\"sc-3f16ee48-12 sc-d1b14060-2 jyLmZI iQLtAb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saved list<\/a> to add more.<\/p>\n<p>AAA<\/p>\n<p>When acclaimed artist Vincent Fantauzzo opened his <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/culture\/art-and-design\/fantauzzo-s-new-gallery-and-the-hidden-work-asher-keddie-calls-heartbreaking-20250526-p5m25a.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">namesake gallery<\/a> in South Yarra in February last year, the launch party had wall-to-wall rich-listers, powerbrokers, Melbourne notables and a sprinkling of traditional celebrity.<\/p>\n<p>The opening night throng at the Chapel Street gallery, a venture between Fantauzzo and billionaire entrepreneur Larry Kestelman, included Gillon McLachlan, Sue Gudinski, Mary Coustas, Shane Delia, Martin Pakula, David Bromley, the late Neale Daniher, Eddie McGuire, Darcy Moore and Kim Ledger, <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/entertainment\/art-and-design\/artist-captures-three-sides-of-heath-ledger-20080125-ge6n7i.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">father of late actor Heath Ledger<\/a>. Also on hand, of course, was Fantauzzo\u2019s wife, award-winning actor Asher Keddie.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Vincent Fantauzzo in his South Yarra gallery.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6f3b38e2bd7a885fac39c8ea97619d7993b8886a.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Vincent Fantauzzo in his South Yarra gallery.Kristoffer Paulsen<\/p>\n<p>Heck, even Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/victoria\/lachlan-murdoch-emerges-in-melbourne-after-family-saga-explodes-20250227-p5lftc.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">turned up<\/a>. It was the hottest ticket in town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to a certain point in your life where art meets business and the magic happens,\u201d Kestelman told media on the night. \u201cThis space is just the beginning. It\u2019s something that will be here for many, many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just 16 months down the track, CBD was surprised on Monday to see that the doors had shut on the spiffy gallery that showcased Fantauzzo\u2019s<a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/naughty-sandro-walking-his-dog-just-cost-artist-vincent-fantauzzo-7000-20240807-p5k0df.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> celebrated portrait work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And late on Monday a message appeared on the Fantauzzo Gallery Instagram page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you, South Yarra. Fantauzzo Gallery is now closed. So, watch this space. We can\u2019t wait for the next launch party.<\/p>\n<p>Racing diplomacy in full gallop at Royal Ascot<\/p>\n<p>Following on from yesterday and top trainer Ciaron Maher\u2019s <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/victoria\/racing-with-the-royals-the-aussies-rubbing-shoulders-with-the-king-at-ascot-20260621-p608pc.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cpinch me\u201d lunch at Windsor Castle with<\/a> King Charles, CBD can report the Aussie contingent on the ground at <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/cbd\/vrc-honchos-off-and-racing-but-not-for-flemington-20250624-p5m9tq.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Ascot also included Victoria Racing Club<\/a> chief executive Kylie Rogers along with VRC chairman Neil Wilson and his wife, Stephanie.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the club, Rogers made a flying four-day trip to London during which she attended two days of the high-society Ascot carnival, putting racing diplomacy into action.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Victoria Racing Club chief executive Kylie Rogers at Royal Ascot.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/08028d1028b03e54be6f44b8ca2f790d1eb2c33c.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 bNAuyX\"\/>Victoria Racing Club chief executive Kylie Rogers at Royal Ascot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeil Wilson and I were guests of Howden, [founder and CEO David Howden], on Wednesday,\u201d Rogers told CBD from Singapore on Sunday night on her way back to Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>The insurance firm holds the naming rights to Victoria Derby Day and is a principal partner of Ascot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe following day we were guests of Felicity Barnard, the chief executive of Ascot. There was certainly no shortage of Australians moving in the royal circle this year.<\/p>\n<p>Miners turn on Twiggy<\/p>\n<p>Andrew \u201cTwiggy\u201d Forrest may have been left looking a little needy when he was unable to get the ear of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the lead up to the release of last month\u2019s federal budget.<\/p>\n<p>But the nation\u2019s peak mining lobby is beginning to look worried about the ongoing campaign to wind back the diesel fuel rebate, as the Labor Party prepares to descend on Adelaide for its national conference next month amid mounting internal party support for the change.<\/p>\n<p>The Minerals Council of Australia produced a whiff of its own desperation on Monday when the lobby group\u2019s chief, Tania Constable, and National Farmers\u2019 Federation chief executive Michael Guerin appeared for the launch of their own \u201cHands Off Our Fuel\u201d campaign. Or \u201cHands Off Out [sic] Fuel campaign\u201d, as reporters were told ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Billionaire Andrew Forrest. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/c0651edf1a89cf7bcd2a75bc7655867ef1a44924.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Billionaire Andrew Forrest. Peter Rae<\/p>\n<p>Twiggy\u2019s Fortescue isn\u2019t a listed member of the peak mining body, which is probably why Constable\u2019s mining lobby felt emboldened to give him a swipe in Monday\u2019s media alert. Or at least we can only guess the mining magnate was front of mind when the lobby group came out to reject \u201cmisinformed activist campaigns\u201d designed to cap or cut the fuel tax credit \u2013 without naming the billionaire, of course.<\/p>\n<p>In an April 14 letter revealed by CBD, Twiggy urged Albanese to consider introducing a $50 million cap on the diesel fuel rebate before the budget.<\/p>\n<p>The rebate, he wrote, refunds $11 billion a year to businesses, much of it flowing to large miners. Of course, that cap never came. (At least not this financial year, Energy Minister Chris Bowen said<a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-27\/fuel-tax-credits-mining-clawback-derailed-iran-war\/106723948\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> last month<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI appreciate this is a busy period,\u201d Twiggy wrote in the letter. \u201cI tried to reach you last week and also offered to meet Treasurer [Jim] Chalmers in Washington this week to discuss the proposal directly. I urge you to consider this reform in the May budget.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s campaign launch wasn\u2019t the first bit of friendly fire we\u2019ve seen over Twiggy\u2019s proposal. The West Australian mining lobby in May criticised Fortescue\u2019s multimillion-dollar campaign, despite the company being one of its members.
