Barry Cotter started the move inside his half, finding O’Reilly who, in turn, fed James McClean and his left-wing centre found Boyce, and his glancing header from 12 yards found the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, a terrible pass by Cotter was snagged by Noonan, but the teenager’s effort from the left-hand side of the six-yard box was outstandingly kept out by Beach.

Rovers had strong claims for a penalty on the half-hour mark, but referee Aaron O’Dowd waved away Dylan Watts’ protests after the midfielder fell under James McClean’s challenge inside the box.

<img decoding="async" alt="Derry City goalkeeper Eddie Beach punches clear during the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division match between Shamrock Rovers and Derry City at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin.
