{"id":513465,"date":"2026-06-23T00:34:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T00:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/513465\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T00:34:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T00:34:50","slug":"tourist-tax-would-mean-double-taxation-of-irish-citizens-hotels-federation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/513465\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourist tax would mean &#8216;double taxation&#8217; of Irish citizens &#8211; Hotels Federation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Irish Hotels Federation has argued that a proposed tourist tax would mean \u201cdouble taxation\u201d of Irish citizens who holiday domestically.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Housing James Browne has said he has \u201cno difficulty\u201d with such a tourist tax, which would see a small fee levied by councils per night that a tourist stays in their local area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other European cities that levy a tourist tax include Amsterdam, Rome and Manchester.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/the-claire-byrne-show-2228535\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Claire Byrne Show<\/a>, Irish Hotels Federation spokesperson Paul Gallagher warned that Ireland is a \u201cvery expensive destination already\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see Eurostats say we&#8217;re the most expensive country in the EU for services,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it&#8217;s true that we are an expensive economy; it&#8217;s difficult to get here, we&#8217;re an island, so you have to fly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t have the same advantages as other locations across Europe where you have interconnectivity with trains or a tunnel in the case of the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we are very reliant on air travel and if Ireland gets too expensive, visitors may choose to go somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2141688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/WBE15A.jpg\" alt=\"WBE15A Cycling in Ireland. Picture by: Alamy.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gallagher continued that hotels already pay \u201csignificant\u201d sums to local authorities in taxation and that Irish citizens in particular would be impacted by such a charge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDomestic citizens stay in Irish hotels if they&#8217;re coming from Cork to Dublin,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would be paying double taxation if they were to stay in a hotel &#8211; so it&#8217;s really not a fair system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gallgher continued that he had still yet to hear what the funds raised from a tourist tax might be spent on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think quite honestly, if I was creating a plan for the improvement of Dublin for the benefit of everybody who comes and the citizens who live here, I&#8217;d like to know what the action plan was first,\u201d he argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is going to be delivered? And rather than talk about the money first, I think, we may discover that we&#8217;re less resistant if we really understood what was going on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also on the programme, Green Party Councillor Michael Pidgeon described a tourist tax as an \u201cidea whose time has come\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u20ac12 million a year &#8211; it would be roughly what would be raised by a 1% service charge or hotel tax in Dublin City Council,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be 250, in and around full time street cleaners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, there&#8217;s one example of what you want to do now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might say, actually, we prefer 30% of the money to go into parks or something other than street cleaning, cultural events, that sort of thing &#8211; that&#8217;s absolutely fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think the reason the conversation starts with money is because that&#8217;s ultimately where a lot of ideas go to die in city councils because you just don&#8217;t have the funds for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2162655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/CXY561.jpg\" alt=\"Ireland weather: CXY561 beach, Lahinch, Co. Clare, Republic of Ireland\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\"\/> The beach in Lahinch, County Clare, Republic of Ireland<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Pidgeon added that it \u201ctotally makes sense\u201d why hotels would lobby against it; however, he believes it would still benefit the local areas they serve, overall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at cities which have hotel taxes, which I think are too high, which I wouldn&#8217;t apply here like Amsterdam, that&#8217;s a 12.5% rate,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they&#8217;ve studied it there and they found it hasn&#8217;t had a measurable impact on tourism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I think a 1 or 2% charge is not going to move the dial in any substantial way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Main image: Beds in a hotel.
