Diabetic foot disease remains a significant public health challenge in Ireland, with people living with diabetes up to 22 times more likely to undergo a major lower-limb amputation than those without the condition. The issue was a key focus of the Beaumont Multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Symposium which took place on Thursday, June 18.<\/p>\n
The event brought together leading Irish and international experts to highlight the prevalence of diabetic foot disease in Ireland and the importance of taking a multidisciplinary approach to management, leading to a reduction in amputation rates and healthcare costs.<\/p>\n
Taking place on-site at Beaumont Hospital, the Symposium is the only one of its kind in Ireland to bring together the key stakeholders in Irish diabetic foot care. The event explored the current practice in Ireland in hospitals and in the community as well as advancements in management, and the gold standard of care: the diabetic foot wound care multidisciplinary approach.<\/p>\n
Through a truly multidisciplinary approach, the Symposium featured contributions from vascular surgery, endocrinology, infectious diseases, orthopaedics, podiatry, wound care, nursing and allied health professionals, alongside internationally recognised experts in diabetic foot care.<\/p>\n

The Symposium comes at a time when diabetic foot disease remains a significant public health challenge. Through earlier intervention, coordinated care and greater awareness, many of these life-changing complications can be prevented.<\/p>\n
Building on the success of the inaugural event in June 2024 which was attended by over 170 healthcare professionals from hospital and community care settings across the island of Ireland, this year\u2019s Symposium attracted over 250 attendees from across the Irish diabetic foot care sector.<\/p>\n
Among the highlights of the programme were presentations from internationally renowned experts in diabetic foot care and peripheral vascular disease. Attendees heard from Professor David Armstrong (Podiatric Surgeon, USC California), widely recognised as one of the world\u2019s leading authorities in podiatry and diabetic foot management. His insights into the latest developments in diabetic foot care were of significant interest to healthcare professionals across Ireland.<\/p>\n
The conference also featured presentations from Dr August Ysa and Dr Marta Lobato of Bilbao, who are recognised experts in below-the-knee and below-the-ankle endovascular revascularisation \u2013 an area of particular importance given that this pattern of peripheral arterial disease is most commonly seen in people with diabetes. Their talks\u00a0 showcased the latest advances, techniques and best practices in the field, providing Irish clinicians with valuable knowledge and practical insights that can help inform and enhance patient care at home.<\/p>\n
The Symposium also featured an academic session where researchers will prevent new and ongoing research.<\/p>\n
Mr Elrasheid Kheirelseid, Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital, said: \u201cDiabetic foot disease is one of the most serious and costly complications of diabetes, yet many amputations can be prevented through early diagnosis, timely intervention and a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to care. The fact that people with diabetes are significantly more likely to undergo a major amputation than those without diabetes underlines the importance of ensuring patients have access to the right expertise at the right time.<\/p>\n
