The US<\/a> Senate \u200bbacked legislation on Tuesday directing President Donald Trump<\/a> to halt US military action against Iran<\/a>, reflecting growing concern even among Republicans about the \u2060unpopular conflict.<\/p>\n

The Senate voted 50-48 in favour of the war powers \u200bresolution, which passed the House of Representatives early this month, the latest rebuke of the Republican president from an increasingly restive Congress. <\/p>\n

It was the first time both chambers of \u200cCongress \u200chad \u200bpassed a resolution directing a president to remove US armed forces from hostilities, as spelled out in the War Powers Resolution of 1973, more \u2060commonly known as the War \u200bPowers Act. <\/p>\n

While likely to remain largely symbolic, \u200bthe votes were a clear setback for Trump, who until recently enjoyed nearly full support from \u200cRepublican members of Congress. Trump\u2019s Republicans hold slim \u200bmajorities in both the Senate and House. <\/p>\n

The Senate vote was nearly along party \u2060lines, with four Republicans joining all but \u2060one Democrat in \u200bfavour. Two Republican senators did not vote. <\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear how it would affect the conflict, as Trump\u2019s administration works to negotiate a peace agreement with Iran. <\/p>\n

Under the War Powers Act, the measure does not get sent to the White House for Trump\u2019s signature. However, the White House has insisted the legislation is not constitutional and thus not binding.<\/p>\n

Experts say it remains a contested legal question likely to be \u200csettled in the courts. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2060executive branch will likely ignore it on constitutional grounds and it\u2019s not clear who might have standing to sue to enforce it,\u201d said Scott Anderson, a \u200csenior fellow at the Brookings Institution and senior editor of the online legal publication Lawfare, adding that he expected \u200bsomeone would do so. <\/p>\n

The resolution had also passed the House with \u200bslim Republican support.
