{"id":515490,"date":"2026-06-24T04:05:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T04:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/515490\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T04:05:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T04:05:12","slug":"new-sculpture-in-seattles-peace-park-could-be-unveiled-in-august-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/515490\/","title":{"rendered":"New sculpture in Seattle&#8217;s Peace Park could be unveiled in August 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After some delay, the effort to replace the stolen bronze statue of a young Hiroshima bomb survivor is on track again.<\/p>\n<p>A new sculpture honoring Sadako Sasaki is now expected in August of next year.<\/p>\n<p>Sadako became a symbol of peace when she folded a thousand paper cranes while in the hospital. Her story moved Floyd Schmoe, a Seattle park ranger and pacifist who led the effort to create Peace Park where a bronze statue of Sadako stood. But in 2024, the statue was stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Saya Moriyasu is a Seattle artist working on the new sculpture. On a recent trip to Hiroshima, where her father\u2019s family is from, Moriyasu said she was able to gain some insight about the 12-year-old girl who died in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuow.org\/stories\/beacon-hill-artist-chosen-to-design-new-sadako-sasaki-sculpture-for-seattle-peace-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Beacon Hill artist chosen to design new sculpture for Seattle&#8217;s Peace Park<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During Moriyasu&#8217;s trip, she met some of Sadako\u2019s classmates. Although Sadako often appeared serious in old photos, Moriyasu said her classmates remember a dynamic, smiling girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a real ringleader,\u201d Moriyasu said, \u201cand a very loving person that brought people together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Sadako\u2019s classmates are in their 80s. Many of them volunteer their time to preserve the stories of the victims and survivors.
