Schools may have to shut (stock)<\/p>\n
Ireland is set for some exceptionally warm weather over the week, and with summer holidays not yet here, many parents are wondering at what point classrooms could be shut?<\/p>\n
While school closures for extreme heat don\u2019t generally happen in Ireland, it is a question on many parents’ minds after Met \u00c9ireann issued both a weather warning and a weather advisory.<\/p>\n
The Status Yellow – High Temperature warning issued for Ireland came into effect at midday on Tuesday and will remain in place until 9am on Friday<\/a>. Met \u00c9ireann forecasters warned maximum temperatures in excess of 27\u00b0C combined with night-time minima in excess of 15\u00b0C were expected, but temperatures could reach 30\u00b0C on Thursday.<\/p>\n A weather advisory for the entire country was also put in place and is valid from midday on Monday, until 9am on Friday.<\/p>\n The national forecaster also warned of potential impacts including water safety issues due to increased use of lakes and beaches, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, and heat stress.<\/p>\n The heat could become too much for kids at school. (stock image)(Image: Getty Images\/Image Source)<\/p>\n While there is no official maximum temperature threshold set that would result in school closures across Ireland, should temperatures hit above 30\u00b0C over a period of consecutive days and should a Met \u00c9ireann<\/a> Red warning be issued, schools would be required to be shut.<\/p>\n But in the event temperatures do not exceed 30\u00b0C and no weather warning is in place, all schools across the country have the discretion to close when they see fit.<\/p>\n The heat could cause schools to close(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n Keeping children safe in hot weather:<\/p>\n Your child could get heat exhaustion if they:<\/p>\n Become too hotAre not drinking enough fluids<\/p>\n Children do not sweat as much as adults. So they find it harder to stay cool. When its hot, you should make sure that babies and children drink enough fluids.<\/p>\n Heat exhaustion can turn into heatstroke if the body cannot cool down within 30 minutes.
