Met \u00c9ireann forecaster Ail\u00eds Hankinson said: \u2018This very warm and humid weather is set to continue as a nationwide yellow high-temperature warning remains in place up to Friday morning.\u2019 <\/p>\n

She suggested that temperatures will reach \u201831C or slightly above that\u2019 at the peak of the heatwave today. <\/p>\n

\u2018There is the potential for records to be broken on Thursday. The current max temperature record is 33.3C, and that was recorded in Kilkenny<\/a> on June 26 back in 1887. <\/p>\n

\u2018So, there is the potential for maybe 33C to be reached \u2013 possibly in Connacht, but more widely in the Midlands and in the West, we\u2019ll see temperatures reaching up to 31C, possibly 32C,\u2019 she said. <\/p>\n

And there will be no relief after sunset<\/a> from the sweltering temperatures. Nights are expected to be \u2018muggy\u2019 during the hot spell with nighttime temperatures of 20C in some areas. <\/p>\n

But while we enjoy the balmy temperatures \u2018there\u2019s a chance of some thunderstorms breaking out in the northwest\u2019 today, according to Ms Hankinson. <\/p>\n

\u2018Now if those thunderstorms do break out with the extra cloud around, we may not see the temperatures getting quite as high, but it\u2019s all dependent on those thunderstorms, when they break out. <\/p>\n

\u2018If they break out on Friday, then we\u2019ll see temperatures starting to cool \u2013 not cold by any means \u2013 still up in the mid 20s but cooler than Thursday. And then at the weekend we\u2019ll see it turning cooler back to the regular Atlantic-driven air,\u2019 she said. <\/p>\n

However, it shouldn\u2019t mean the end of what has been a glorious early summer for Ireland. <\/p>\n

\u2018Current climate projections indicate that there will be increases in summer temperatures, heat waves, and temperature extremes over the coming years and decades,\u2019 the forecaster said. <\/p>\n

\u2018So, it\u2019s not impossible that we\u2019ll see more dry and hot spells coming,\u2019 she added. <\/p>\n

The director of the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management<\/a>, Keith Leonard, warned people to be careful but enjoy the \u2018glorious\u2019 hot spell.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s very much needed after the winter, but it doesn\u2019t have an equal effect on everybody. Some impacts, particularly for very elderly people and younger people\u2026 So we want people to check on elderly people who live alone. These weather conditions can be a real strain for older people.\u2019 <\/p>\n

He also warned about the risk of drowning as people go swimming in unguarded waterways.<\/p>\n

\u2018Our message this summer is really simple: if there\u2019s no lifeguard, don\u2019t get in. Swim where you can be seen. Lakes, reservoirs, disused quarries are much colder than the sea and often hide a lot of hazards and can trap swimmers. <\/p>\n

\u2018If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
