There has been an 8% increase in the number of women who were attacked in the first three months of this year when compared to the same period last year, according to the latest CSO crime figures.<\/p>\n
The number of male victims of assaults and related offences also increased by 1% in the same period to over 3,300.<\/p>\n
However, there were significant decreases in six of the 15 categories of serious crime in the 12 months up to the end of March this year.<\/p>\n
The figures show that 5,794 people were victims of assaults and related offences in the first three months of this year, a 4% increase on last year.<\/p>\n
The figures show more women were attacked.<\/p>\n
There were 2,460 female victims from January to March this year, an increase of 8%, with an average of 27 reported attacks on women every day.<\/p>\n
There has also been a significant increases in negligent and endangerment offences, including dangerous driving, speeding, drink and drug driving, up by 6%.<\/p>\n
There were also 16 more incidents of people interfering with an aircraft or airport facilities.<\/p>\n
Weapons and explosives offences also increased by 6%, largely due to more people being caught with guns, weapons and fireworks.<\/p>\n
Drugs and fraud were up 3% respectively, with more dealers than addicts being caught.<\/p>\n
Theft offences are slightly up at 1%, but thefts from shops are up 6% to more than 35,000 cases over the 12 months.<\/p>\n
Twenty-five cases of human trafficking were also reported, 11 more than the previous year; there were 33 cases of prostitution, an increase of eight.<\/p>\n
However, there were also significant decreases in other serious and organised crime, including homicide and related offences, which were down 27% over the 12 month period.<\/p>\n
Reported sex offences were down 15%, burglary reduced by 9% and robbery was down 7%.<\/p>\n
The CSO has stressed that the figures only relate to crimes reported to garda\u00ed and recorded on their PULSE system and do not provide an indicator of the prevalence of crime because there is likely to be an element of under reporting particularly in cases of sex offences, fraud and assault.<\/p>\n
