For almost 50 years, the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Museum in Aykley Heads shared the stories of (surprise) the Durham Light Infantry and shone a particular spotlight on its heroic efforts during World Wars One and Two. But, in 2016,\u00a0the lights went out. The\u00a0venue was forced to shut due to cost-cutting measures and for years afterwards the building was left empty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then in March 2024, plans\u00a0to finally refurbish the museum were given the green light. Over the last two years, the building\u00a0has been\u00a0stripped down to its basic structure and almost entirely rebuilt. Now, it\u2019s home to The Light and is set to reopen this August.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Light will be the first venue in the region dedicated to contemporary art of this scale of national and international importance.\u00a0It\u2019ll\u00a0launch with an exhibition titled\u00a0Victory Over the Sun: Encounters with Light.\u00a0The show is all about how artists\u00a0have used light as a material in extraordinary and unexpected ways. It\u2019ll include works like\u00a0Tracey Emin\u2019s neon LED signs, Steve McQueen\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Remember Me\u2019\u00a0installation and David Shrigley\u2019s animated line drawing \u2018Light Switch\u2019. Other featured artists include\u00a0Chila Burman, Jenny Holzer,\u00a0Tatsuo Miyajima and Cerith Wyn Evans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The redeveloped venue hasn\u2019t forgotten its past, though. It will still pay a nod to its historic connection to the Durham Light\u00a0Infantry through a dedicated DLI gallery. There, visitors will find\u00a0objects, documents and film footage\u00a0that tell the story of the regiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Karen Allison, Durham county council\u2019s cabinet member for\u00a0leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street said: \u2018The building has always been both a museum and an art gallery and this tradition will continue at The Light. Through exhibitions such as Victory Over the Sun, we will celebrate County Durham\u2019s extraordinary heritage and innovative spirit through spectacular works of art, while providing opportunities for artists to collaborate and for residents and visitors from further afield to enjoy a fun and inspiring day out.<\/p>\n

\u2018By remodelling and extending the existing 1960s building, we have created a modern and dynamic venue capable of hosting world-class contemporary exhibitions. A dedicated DLI gallery, meanwhile, will bring stories from the Regiment to life in ways that have never been possible before.\u2019<\/p>\n
