{"id":518690,"date":"2026-06-26T01:23:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T01:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/518690\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T01:23:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T01:23:20","slug":"age-pension-income-and-asset-test-limits-to-rise-next-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/518690\/","title":{"rendered":"Age pension income and asset test limits to rise next week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The income you can earn and the value of assets you can own in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/retirement-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retirement<\/a>,\u00a0while still qualifying for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.gov.au\/income-support-payments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">age pension<\/a>, will rise next week.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Social Services has just announced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.gov.au\/income-support-payments\/resource\/indexation-rates-july-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the next lot of indexation changes<\/a>\u00a0to means testing for the pension. <\/p>\n<p>These indexation changes are made twice per year to reflect the impact of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pension amounts will remain as they are today. All that is changing next Wednesday, 1 July, is the parameters for means testing. <\/p>\n<p>The full age pension is $1,200.90 per fortnight for singles, and $905.20 per person, per fortnight, for couples.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s review. <\/p>\n<p> <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Senior-friends-enjoy-happy-retirement-1200x675.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-post-image\" alt=\"Four senior friends laugh together with arms around each other.\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p> When can I get the age pension?  <\/p>\n<p>Australians born on or after 1 January 1957 are eligible for the pension\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.gov.au\/seniors\/benefits-payments\/age-pension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">at age 67<\/a>, whether retired or not. <\/p>\n<p>The pension is subject to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/assets-test-for-age-pension?context=22526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">assets test<\/a>\u00a0and an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/income-test-for-age-pension?context=22526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">income test<\/a>. You have to pass both to receive the full pension. <\/p>\n<p>If you own too much in assets, or earn too much income, you may only qualify for a part-pension, or no support at all. <\/p>\n<p> What are the new pension thresholds for asset values?  <\/p>\n<p>The first thing to know is that your home is excluded from the\u00a0pension assets test if you own your residence. <\/p>\n<p>If you rent your home, you are allowed to own more assets (and earn more income) while still qualifying for the pension.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/asset-types?context=22526#a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Assessable assets<\/a>\u00a0include ASX shares,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/how-to-add-international-exposure-to-your-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">international shares<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/definitions\/superannuation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">superannuation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/definitions\/bonds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bonds<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/shares-etfs-managed-funds-lics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">managed funds<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/investing-in-property\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rental properties<\/a>, and cash.<\/p>\n<p> Single homeowners  <\/p>\n<p>Under next week&#8217;s changes, single homeowners will be able to own up to $333,000 in assets and still qualify for the full age pension. <\/p>\n<p>Single homeowners with assets worth between $333,001 and $733,500 will qualify for a part-payment.<\/p>\n<p> Single non-homeowners <\/p>\n<p>Single renters will be able to own up to $600,000 in assets and still qualify for the full age pension. <\/p>\n<p>Single non-homeowners with assets worth between $600,001 and $1,000,500 will be eligible for a part-pension.<\/p>\n<p> Couple homeowners  <\/p>\n<p>Couple homeowners will be able to own up to $499,000 in assets and still qualify for the full age pension. <\/p>\n<p>Couple homeowners with assets worth between $499,001 and $1,102,500 will still be eligible for a part-payment.<\/p>\n<p> Couples who are renting in retirement  <\/p>\n<p>Couple non-homeowners will be able to own up to $766,00 in assets and still be eligible for the full pension.<\/p>\n<p>Renters who own assets worth between $766,001 and $1,369,500 will qualify for a part-payment.<\/p>\n<p> How much income can you earn and still get the age pension? <\/p>\n<p>Under next week&#8217;s changes, singles will be able to earn up to $226 per fortnight and still qualify for the full pension. <\/p>\n<p>If they earn between $227 and $2,627.80 per fortnight, they will qualify for a part-payment. <\/p>\n<p>Couples will be able to earn up to $396 per fortnight and still receive the full age pension. <\/p>\n<p>Couples who earn between $397 and $4,016.80 per fortnight will be eligible for a part-payment. <\/p>\n<p>Assessable income includes wages and investment income. <\/p>\n<p>To make things easier, Centrelink relies on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/deeming?context=22526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">deeming<\/a>\u00a0rates to determine a pensioner&#8217;s investment income.<\/p>\n<p>(The only exception is rent from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com.au\/investing-education\/investing-in-property\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investment properties<\/a>. Pensioners must report actual net rental income each year.)<\/p>\n<p>Deeming rates have been well below market average returns for many years. <\/p>\n<p>The Albanese Government has been gradually increasing deeming rates and the asset value thresholds. <\/p>\n<p>Under next week&#8217;s changes, the lower deeming rate will remain at 1.25%, and the upper deeming rate will remain 3.25%.<\/p>\n<p>However, the thresholds will lift. <\/p>\n<p>The lower deeming rate will apply if a single pensioner&#8217;s assets are worth less than $66,800.
