\n\tMatty Matheson<\/a> is not an actor. Or at least, he was not an actor.<\/p>\n

\n\tMatheson, the former executive chef at Canadian restaurant Parts & Labour, was hired to be a culinary producer on FX\u2019s The Bear<\/a>. Then he eventually became a series regular, playing The Bear handyman Neil Fak<\/a> through the hit show\u2019s just-launched fifth and final season. So who better to critique his fellow actors on their kitchen skills than the one guy who does both jobs?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLiza\u2019s over here deboning branzino at home,\u201d Matheson began, while seated next to Col\u00f3n-Zayas, who plays Tina Marrero, and who became the first Latina ever to win best supporting actress in a comedy series. (Of course, we can debate that whole \u201ccomedy series\u201d thing<\/a> until the cows come home \u2014 and get ground up for his Matty\u2019s Patty\u2019s Burger Club.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think everyone\u2019s a little more connected with food, a little more understanding and pushing themselves through it \u2014 good or bad,\u201d Matheson told The Hollywood Reporter. \u201cTen out of 10 for trying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCooking is not easy,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe alchemy of seasoning properly, the right heat, the right temperature of the food you\u2019re putting in the pan. There are so many things that can come into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBaking requires even more precision. Lionel Boyce, who plays pastry chef Marcus on the series, isn\u2019t even trying it after Christopher Storer\u2019s cameras cut. Someone needs to tell his friends.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s that awkward thing where if I\u2019m at a dinner party or something, and they get to dessert, everyone just kind of looks at me, like, \u2018So you brought nothing, you\u2019ve done nothing.\u2019 I just pretend like I don\u2019t see them, I just look away,\u201d Boyce said. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m the one in the friend group who cooks the least, so we don\u2019t need to turn the tables and put it on me now \u2014 let\u2019s just keep things moving how they were before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJeremy Allen White<\/a> and Ayo Edebiri<\/a> play the top chefs on the show, Carmy and Sydney, respectively. They picked up some skills in seasons one and two, but plateaued at probably-not-deboning-branzino.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite says he began the series at \u201ca real, like, zero base.\u201d He added, \u201cSo I\u2019ve improved significantly, but I\u2019m still just, like, OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe don\u2019t have to [cook] as much on camera, so we haven\u2019t had to practice as much,\u201d Edebiri, his CDC (chef de cuisine), added. \u201cI think that we both sort of leveled out to something decent.\u201d<\/p>\n
