\u201cYou guys wanna sing a song with me?\u201d Dave Grohl<\/a> asks the sun-kissed crowd at the first of two sold-out gigs at Anfield, already drenched in beer, sweat, and god-knows-what. \u201cYou guys wanna sing 30 songs with me? It\u2019s gonna be a long night motherfuckers.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not wrong. You pretty much know what you\u2019re going to get at a Foo Fighters<\/a> show, and they always put the hours in to play \u201caaaaaaaaaaall night\u201d. Along with mammoth sets, they also ladle on the hits and the brotherly love \u2013 two things they famously love up in Liverpool.<\/p>\n

While still obviously massive, Anfield feels somewhat more intimate than other stadiums (here\u2019s a 60,000-strong crowd compared to Wembley\u2019s 90,000), but Grohl and the band do their utmost to pull everyone to their bosom in an escapable bear hug. Fitting red flares fill up the air from the top of the stage as the band step through the crimson mist with Grohl pegging it down the short gangway before the brutal opening one-two punch of \u2018All My Life\u2019 into \u2018The Pretender\u2019. \u201cI\u2019ve got a question: do you motherfuckers love rock\u2019n\u2019roll?\u201d he asks. Go on then, and \u2018Times Like These\u2019 makes it three.<\/p>\n

They wouldn\u2019t be on the road without a reason, mind, and new number \u2018Of All People\u2019 from the recent \u2018Your Favorite Toy<\/a>\u2019 turns the dial up to gnarly, but still can\u2019t quite find a deserving home in the hearts of many chattering casual fans. They know how to counter it, mind. \u201cWho\u2019s old school?\u201d asks Grohl before the early stoner rock banger \u2018Stacked Actors\u2019, seamlessly rolls into ultimate crowd pleaser \u2018My Hero\u2019, the grunge meets Tom Petty<\/a> grace of \u2018Learn To Fly\u2019 and mass sing-along of \u2018These Days\u2019. It\u2019s relentless, like being trapped in a bar with a malfunctioning jukebox.<\/p>\n

That laid-back rock club vibe is what makes this work. Foos don\u2019t have the bells, whistles, pyro, or blockbuster special effects of other standard stadium acts, just tunes and banter. Who\u2019d have thought that \u2018This Is A Call\u2019, \u2018For All the Cows\u2019 and \u2018Big Me\u2019 \u2013 written for their 1995 debut and for sweaty little rooms \u2013 would land like Queen<\/a> classics on this pitch? They keep the backroom jam energy up by splicing a little Mot\u00f6rhead into the Metallica<\/a>-meets-Sabbath<\/a> chug-along of \u2018No Son Of Mine\u2019 before bringing the vast venue in for a run of numbers on the B-stage, peaking with the tale of writing Nirvana<\/a> B-side \u2018Marigold\u2019 on Kurt Cobain<\/a>\u2019s couch, and the tender \u2018Aurora\u2019 being dedicated to the late, great Taylor Hawkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then they really bring it home\u00a0medley of covers from each members\u2019 past bands (No Use For A Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Germs, to name just a few of them) and with Grohl and drummer Ilan Rubin swapping instruments for a laugh. It\u2019s worth remembering that Foos are much more than \u201cDave Grohl\u2019s other band\u201d but a pretty mighty supergroup.<\/p>\n

Our intrigue is piqued when Grohl picks up a young chap from the audience for the challenge of completing a Rubik\u2019s Cube on stage for the privilege of drumming \u2018Rope\u2019 with the band. He smashes it, then the illusion is shattered when we learn it\u2019s actually the boyfriend of Grohl\u2019s daughter Harper, and today is his 18th birthday. After an admirably out there encore of the psych-y meandering of \u2018The Teacher\u2019 and early deep cut \u2018Exhausted\u2019, the staple closing banger \u2018Everlong\u2019 and the red fireworks lighting up the sky make everyone in Liverpool feel like it\u2019s their special day.<\/p>\n

It all feels a little too familiar to the usual Foos fare, but Radiohead<\/a> they are not. This is what they do. Grohl asks why oh why the band are only playing these two Liverpool gigs in their home away from home of the UK this year, but assures us that this is merely\u00a0 \u201ca cocktail party before the big dinner\u201d \u2013 with talk of some big plans in Blighty for 2027. For now, \u201cthis is just the first date\u201d, so pucker up for Saturday and party on.<\/p>\n
