Here&#8217;s how to watch the rare flyby during two livestreams on June 26 and June 27.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-621cd045-0627-4054-80c8-cd6b418ab85b\"\/>How can I watch the flyby online?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c8989335-1bba-4aa4-b448-8155628c6738\">The Virtual Telescope Project will host two <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@GianMasiVirtualTelescope\/streams\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@GianMasiVirtualTelescope\/streams\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">YouTube livestreams<\/a> starting at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT) on June 26 and 27, before and after asteroid 1997 NC1&#8217;s closest approach to Earth. Each event will feature live views of the asteroid captured by a suite of robotic telescopes in Manciano, Italy, weather permitting.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e4d5241f-1c9b-4e84-b88d-b9d76d13c716-0\">&#8220;While this encounter is absolutely no cause for concern, it will be a very important and interesting opportunity,&#8221; Virtual Telescope Project founder Gianluca Masi said in a press release sent to Space.com. &#8220;An asteroid of this size comes this close roughly once every ten years, becoming bright enough to be easily visible through small telescopes while it crosses the starry sky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"max-h-12 w-auto\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a> designated 152637 1997 NC1 will make its closest approach to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> at 7:16 a.m. EDT (1116 GMT) on June 27, when it will pass 1,594,339 miles (2,565,839 kilometers) from our planet, whipping by at 19,879 mph (31,992 km\/h), <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=1997%20NC1&amp;view=OPC\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=1997%20NC1&amp;view=OPC\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With an estimated diameter of 1,443 feet (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/neo.ssa.esa.int\/search-for-asteroids?sum=1&amp;des=152637%201997NC1\" data-url=\"https:\/\/neo.ssa.esa.int\/search-for-asteroids?sum=1&amp;des=152637%201997NC1\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">440 meters<\/a>), 1997 NC1&#8217;s size and potential to pass close to Earth during future orbits have led to it being designated as a potentially hazardous asteroid by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>. Magnitude is the scale used by astronomers to measure the apparent brightness of an object in the night sky.
