Last year, it was the new U.S. immigration policies with \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d the year before it was\u2026 Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s tweets amid \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d? Now, in the 2026-2027 movie awards season, the nucleus of all controversy has emerged: the debate over artificial<\/a> intelligence.<\/p>\n

On this week\u2019s episode of IndieWire\u2019s \u201cScreen Talk<\/a>\u201d podcast, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio unpack what it means for the future of an increasingly tech-company-dominated Hollywood that Amazon MGM Studios just dropped Luca Guadagnino\u2019s movie \u201cArtificial,\u201d a Simon Rich-scripted biopic-expos\u00e9 of Sam Altman, with Andrew Garfield starring as the OpenAI CEO. <\/p>\n

Guadagnino\u2019s latest, and third film<\/a> with Amazon MGM after box-office hit \u201cChallengers\u201d and awards-season also-ran \u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d is now looking for a home. Hush-hush distributor screenings of \u201cArtificial\u201d took place last weekend, as handled by CAA Media Finance. Word on the street is that this movie turned out to be darker and more negative toward Altman than Amazon expected, and the streamer saw no upside in releasing it just a few months after Amazon\u2019s $50 billion investment in OpenAI was made public. Jeff Bezos and Sam Altman, after all, are pals. He attended the Bezos-Sanchez wedding in Venice, Italy. The major studios, including Netflix, A24, and Universal\u2019s Focus Features, meanwhile, all reportedly passed on \u201cArtificial,\u201d with Neon and Mubi potentially circling. That\u2019s not surprising, as most big corporations are in bed with AI in one form or another<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The larger corporate-owned entities will be careful not to take unnecessary risks going forward. Hollywood got away with \u201cThe Social Network\u201d; whither \u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d Aaron Sorkin\u2019s follow-up, out October 9?<\/p>\n

Google, meanwhile, just planted a $75 million stake in A24<\/a> as part of a new artificial-intelligence research partnership. The deal marks the first time Google has taken a stake in a studio. In other words, no question that the debate around AI will dominate this coming awards season. Amazon filmmakers and \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be asked on the campaign trail about their distributor dropping Guadagnino\u2019s film. A24 filmmakers, from Kane Parsons of \u201cBackrooms\u201d and Jessie Eisenberg of \u201cThe Debut<\/a>,\u201d will be asked similar questions about A24\u2019s new relationship with Google DeepMind.<\/p>\n

Actors and writers are threatened by AI, but plenty of other people and companies are deep into it. We discuss what it means for the upcoming Oscar season.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere on the podcast, we finally catch up on Olivia Wilde\u2019s relationship comedy<\/a>, the four-hander \u201cThe Invite<\/a>,\u201d which is more \u201cBob and Carol and Ted and Alice\u201d than \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\u201d and was one of the most competitive sales at Sundance this year before landing at A24.<\/p>\n
