Not so, as it transpired.

<img decoding="async" alt="26 June 2026; Keith Buckley of Dundalk in action against Dean McMenamy of Waterford during the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division match between Dundalk and Waterford at Oriel Park in Dundalk, Louth. But Waterford have Tommy Lonergan. Their reliance on Padraig Amond is not so stark these days with the former St Patrick’s Athletic and Republic of Ireland Under-21 player around.

Lonergan is now their talisman-in-chief and before his goal halved the deficit in first-half injury time, he had already served noticed of his threat by smacking a post from close range in the 40th minute.

Waterford’s first owed much to referee Marc Lynch identifying the ball had crossed the line despite Keith Buckley’s best efforts.

Waterford – and Lonergan’s – second also involved Lynch. He pointed to the spot shortly after the hour mark, adjudging Bobby Burns to have handled. Lonergan made no mistake with his penalty.

With momentum on their side, Waterford pushed for a winner.

Jordan Houston was denied by the post and substitute Jorgen Voilas by a brilliant Rob Cornwall block. Former Lilywhite Hayden Cann would have been an unpopular scorer on the Carrick Road had Enda Minogue not repelled his back-post header.

Dundalk had their chances too, especially through Kenny and Horgan. They will rue more dropped points against the league’s bottom side, regardless of how much they have improved lately.

John Mahon scored the winner, coming with four minutes of normal time to play. His acrobatic finish, coming after the Lilywhites failed to adequately clear a long throw into their box, was his fourth of the campaign.

Dundalk: Enda Minogue; Keith Buckley, Rob Cornwall, Bobby Burns, Tyreke Wilson; Aodh Dervin (Mayowa Animasahun, 74), Harry Groome (Shane Treacy, 68), Ronan Teahan; Eoin Kenny, Gbemi Arubi, Daryl Horgan.

Waterford: Stephen McMullan; Hayden Cann, John Mahon, Kevin Long; Jordan Houston (Trae Bailey Coyle, 80), Luke Heeney (Samuel Glenfield, 56), William Johnson, Dean McMenamy (Jurgen Voilas, 56), Benny Couto; Tommy Lonergan; Padraig Amond.

Referee: Marc Lynch.

Watch every game of the FIFA 2026 World Cup live on RTÉ with highlights on RTÉ Sport digital platforms and live blogs on RTÉ.ie/sport and RTÉ News app

It was yet another eventful meeting between Dundalk and Waterford in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division but…

[9
61,60,112
post-520545","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-sports
["GET
