{"id":520659,"date":"2026-06-27T04:40:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T04:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/520659\/"},"modified":"2026-06-27T04:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T04:40:11","slug":"many-happy-returns-for-derry-on-new-brandywell-surface","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/520659\/","title":{"rendered":"Many happy returns for Derry on new Brandywell surface"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Derry City deservedly eased to a comfortable win over Drogheda United at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron Dummigan&#8217;s unstoppable curling effort in the first half was the perfect way to mark Derry&#8217;s return to their new grass pitch and Adam O&#8217;Reilly&#8217;s stoppage time goal sealed the points.<\/p>\n<p>Derry should have got off to the perfect start as James Olayinka&#8217;s run and mishit shot found Michael Duffy but his close range effort on three minutes was kept out by United goalkeeper Luke Dennison.<\/p>\n<p>The woodwork came to United&#8217;s rescue on 25 minutes as Adam O&#8217;Reilly&#8217;s clever pass released Brandon Fleming.<\/p>\n<p>The left-back&#8217;s cross deflected straight into Olayinka&#8217;s path, but the midfielder&#8217;s close range side footed attempt on the half-volley came crashing back off the crossbar.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"James McClean of Derry City in action against Edwin Agbaje of Drogheda United during the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division match between Derry City and Drogheda United at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium in Derry.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/002497dc-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nJames McClean gets a cross in for Derry in the first half<\/p>\n<p>Derry went in front three minutes later in superb fashion, as Dummigan, who won May&#8217;s Goal of the Month, netted another stunning goal, this time his curling 25 yard strike flew high into the top left hand corner.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors were denied by the woodwork themselves just after the half-hour mark but Thomas Oluwa&#8217;s effort from just inside the box clipped the top of the crossbar before flying over.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later a neat pass by Liam Boyce picked out Duffy on the right, but his angled drive close to the six yard box was kept out by a diving Dennison.
