Iran face an anxious wait to see if they will progress to the World Cupknockout stage after they came from behind to hold Egypt to a 1-1 draw, which ended in dramatic fashion with an apparent last-ditch winner ruled out for offside.<\/p>\n
Egypt, whose\u00a0qualification\u00a0for the last-32 was\u00a0already guaranteed, took the lead inside five minutes through Mahmoud Saber, before Ramin Rezaeian equalised from a tight angle in the 14th minute of a frantic start.<\/p>\n
The early action fizzled out as the game became scrappy until a remarkable finale in which Iran hit the woodwork before snatching what seemed a famous win, only to have VAR intervene.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Mehdi Taremi \u2013 who had a penalty saved in the first half \u2013 hit the crossbar with a late header before Shoja Khalilzadeh fired home in the\u00a093rd minute,\u00a0sparking wild celebrations as the Iran bench streamed onto the pitch.<\/p>\n
But Khalilzadeh had strayed just\u00a0offside\u00a0and Egypt clung on for a\u00a0draw,\u00a0which\u00a0means\u00a0they\u00a0finish second with five points, behind Belgium on goal difference,\u00a0and will play Australia in Dallas on July 3 in the knockout phase.<\/p>\n
Iran are\u00a0third\u00a0on three points and must wait for confirmation that they will go through as one of the eight best third-placed teams.<\/p>\n
The game was played with a large and loud Egyptian contingent in the stands, though there were also significant numbers of Iranians, some of whom waved pre-revolutionary flags and also booed Iran\u2019s national anthem.<\/p>\n
Friday\u2019s game was also designated the \u201cPride Match\u201d by local organisers and some rainbow flags could be seen inside the stadium, though the game passed without incident off the pitch.<\/p>\n
Egypt broke the deadlock after a slick move with Mohamed Salah at its centre as his trademark left-footed attempt eventually fell to Saber, whose tame effort slipped through Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.<\/p>\n
Iran were unfazed, though, and Taremi almost immediately won a penalty which was well saved by Mostafa Shobeir. The Egypt goalkeeper then produced another diving stop, only to see Rezaeian equalise on the rebound.<\/p>\n
There were few clear opportunities after the first-half hydration break and, with Egypt\u2019s progress to the knockout stage for the first time already confirmed, the Pharaohs were timid as Iran grew in confidence.<\/p>\n
Pinball in the box in added time ended with Khalilzadeh firing home to seemingly send Iran through to the Round of 32, but the goal was ruled out and Team Melli\u2019s fate was no longer in their own hands.<\/p>\n
The draw means Egypt finish second with five points, behind Belgium on goal difference after the Red Devils\u2019 beat New Zealand 5-1.<\/p>\n
Leandro Trossard scored twice for Belgium, who sealed top spot in Group G and a place in the round of 32, while the Kiwis bowed out of the tournament.<\/p>\n
Belgium finished above Egypt on goal difference after they both finished with five points from three matches, followed by Iran on three points and New Zealand on one. In the other match in the group, Egypt drew 1-1 with Iran.<\/p>\n
Belgium will next face one of the eight best third-placed teams.<\/p>\n
The Belgians dominated from the outset and were the only side to threaten in the opening half, enjoying the bulk of possession.<\/p>\n
Trossard thought he had given Belgium the lead in the 11th minute, only to see his effort strike the post and bounce to safety.<\/p>\n
Minutes later, Belgium were awarded a penalty after New Zealand defender Finn Surman was hit on the arm by Trossard\u2019s shot. However, following a VAR review, the referee ruled that Surman\u2019s arm was in a natural position and overturned the decision.<\/p>\n
Belgium\u2019s pressure finally told in the 28th minute when Trossard converted Kevin De Bruyne\u2019s cross from close range, finishing off a well-worked move to break the deadlock.<\/p>\n
Trossard, 31, doubled Belgium\u2019s lead in the 50th minute, again combining effectively with De Bruyne as he latched on to a through ball, controlled it on his chest and volleyed home from close range.<\/p>\n
New Zealand threatened when Elijah Just forced Thibaut Courtois into action in the 54th minute, the goalkeeper diving low to push away their first shot on target.<\/p>\n
De Bruyne added a third goal soon after, striking low from the edge of the box after being set up by Trossard, taking one touch on to his left foot before driving the ball into the bottom corner. The 34-year-old became the oldest player to score for Belgium at a World Cup.<\/p>\n
The goal drew chants of \u2018Oh Kevin De Bruyne\u2019 from Belgium fans at BC Place, where both sets of supporters turned out in large numbers.<\/p>\n
