\n The facility at Platin is due to begin operating in 2028\n <\/p>\n

SSE has begun construction on a new power station in County Meath.<\/p>\n

Platin Power Station, which represents an investment of up to \u20ac300 million from SSE, will be capable of running on natural gas or sustainable biofuels with the potential to convert to hydrogen in the future.<\/p>\n

The 180MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine \u2013 due to become operational in 2028 \u2013 will provide vital flexible capacity to Ireland\u2019s electricity system, backing up renewables in periods of low wind generation.<\/p>\n

A ceremonial \u2018turning of the sod\u2019 event was held today at the site in Platin, with Minister Thomas Byrne TD being joined by local officials and representatives and SSE\u2019s Chief Financial Officer Barry O\u2019Regan.<\/p>\n

Platin is one of two new power stations being delivered in Ireland by SSE. In County Kerry, construction began in December 2025 on Tarbert Next Generation Power Station. Together, the projects represent an investment of up to \u20ac600 million in flexible generation capacity designed to strengthen Ireland’s security of electricity supply.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the sod-turning, Minister of State for European Affairs Thomas Byrne said: \u201cI’m here today at the turning of the sod of the new peaker power plant at Platin, and very glad to be here. This plant is going to help with the transition to renewables by making sure that we have electricity when we need it. The price of electricity is very high on the agenda at the moment, and we’re going to have to ensure that we have enough generation to meet the needs of the country going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council Cllr Sarah Reilly said: \u201cI welcome the commencement of construction on the Platin Power Station in Duleek, an important step in strengthening Meath and Ireland\u2019s energy infrastructure, helping to ensure a secure and reliable supply of power for homes, businesses and communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our energy system continues to evolve, investments like this play a vital role in supporting stability and resilience, both locally and nationally. I look forward to seeing the development progress and the long-term benefits it will bring in safeguarding our energy future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barry O\u2019Regan, Chief Financial Officer of SSE, said: “There is clear system need in Ireland for new flexible power to support the energy transition and SSE is answering that call by investing up to \u20ac300 million in Platin Power Station. In doing so, we\u2019re demonstrating our continued commitment to delivering new energy infrastructure that can support economic growth, strengthen security of electricity supply and enable a low-carbon future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to continued collaboration with local representatives, stakeholders and the wider community as construction progresses. At the same time, as Ireland looks to demonstrate leadership at a European level, we\u2019ll continue to press the need for enduring low-carbon solutions for thermal power alongside the acceleration of our renewable ambitions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction activity is now underway on site, with the project expected to support approximately 200 jobs during the construction phase.
