As we wait for Netflix\u2019s upcoming animated detective movie Ray Gunn<\/a> to get a trailer, there\u2019s one important question: will it come to theaters?<\/p>\n

The answer currently appears to be \u201cno,\u201d but writer-director Brad Bird<\/a> would love for that to change. At this week\u2019s Annecy Animation Festival, he mentioned to Polygon<\/a> he was \u201ctalking\u201d to the streamer, but he doesn\u2019t know \u201cwhether they\u2019re listening.\u201d Glad as he is that the film exists, he\u2019d be even happier if it was on the big screen, he said, highlighting his membership in the exhibition trade organization Cinema United. \u201c[They\u2019re] all about theatrical,\u201d said Bird, \u201cand I believe it\u2019s the best way to see this movie the first time you see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every once in a while, Netflix puts a movie in theaters for Oscar consideration. But in the past year, KPop Demon Hunters<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Stranger Things\u00a0finale<\/a> both came to theaters because they were big events that proved to be worth the effort<\/a>. Next year, the streamer will let Greta Gerwig\u2019s Chronicles of Narnia movie, The Magician\u2019s Nephew, open in theaters first<\/a>, then\u00a0bring it to the platform after the reverse has been the standard for years.<\/p>\n

Should Netflix decide\u00a0Ray Gunn\u00a0isn\u2019t theater-worthy, Bird has a plan B for audiences: DIY a theatrical experience. \u201cFind the biggest screen you can, even if it\u2019s down the street at your neighbor\u2019s place,\u201d he suggested. \u201cBarge right in there and say, \u2018We\u2019re seeing this movie, because you have a big screen and that\u2019s the way it should be seen.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Ray Gunn\u00a0is expected to hit Netflix on December 18.<\/p>\n
