Author Carley Fortune has revealed new details about the film adaptation of her novel Meet Me at the Lake<\/a>, which Prince Harry and Meghan Markle\u2019s Archewell Productions is developing for Netflix. The bestselling novelist appeared on Jenna Bush Hager\u2019s literary podcast Open Book With Jenna<\/a> while promoting her latest summer romance<\/a>, Our Perfect Storm<\/a>.<\/p>\n During the interview, Fortune disclosed that a director has been attached to the project. However, she didn\u2019t share a name, and there is none yet listed on the film\u2019s IMDB listing<\/a>. The screenplay is also still being refined, while casting details and a premiere date have not been announced. Archewell Productions acquired the rights to the book<\/a> in August 2023. The novel centers on two strangers, who spend a day together and make a promise\u2014one that only one of them ultimately keeps, with life-changing consequences for both.<\/p>\n Fortune said she decided to partner with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after a lengthy call with Meghan and Archewell film producer Tracy Ryerson. \u201cI felt like they really understood the story and what mattered about the story,\u201d Fortune told Hager. \u201cIt\u2019s a romance, but it\u2019s very much about a mother and daughter too, and we talked a lot about parenthood and also about how these love stories are about so much more. It\u2019s a story about grief, it\u2019s a story about mental health, and so I felt like it was in good hands with them.\u201d<\/p>\n Meet Me at the Lake is one of several projects moving through Archewell Productions as the studio continues to build on its relationship<\/a> with Netflix, which the couple first established in 2020<\/a>. Late last year, Harry and Meghan came aboard as producers on a Netflix adaptation<\/a> of The Wedding Date, the debut novel by New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory. Girls Trip screenwriter Tracy Oliver is adapting the script and will also produce alongside the couple. First published in 2018, the story is an interracial romance following a political strategist who strikes up an agreement with a stranger she meets in an elevator to attend a wedding together.<\/p>\n On the nonfiction side, the royal couple executive produced<\/a> Cookie Queens, a documentary about the Girl Scouts of America that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival<\/a> in January. Speaking to Variety<\/a> around the film\u2019s release, Meghan described the kind of stories Archewell Productions intends to pursue. \u201cIt\u2019s been key to focus on stories that resonate with people; things that are not necessarily the most topical and end up becoming something that is more topical,\u201d Meghan told the trade publication. \u201cIt\u2019s not dissimilar to saying \u2018Hide the vegetables.\u2019 When you see this film, you might not know what you\u2019re going in to find, but, ultimately, you come out of it with so much more to talk about, to dissect and to really better understand each other.\u201d<\/p>\n Rachel King (she\/her) is a news writer at\u00a0Town & Country.
