As one of the big movies of the weekend, folks are watching\u00a0Supergirl<\/a>\u00a0and have their thoughts on it. The same goes for director Craig Gillespie and writer Ann Nogueira, who\u2019ve been talking to press about how the movie\u2019s production. First announced as an adaptation of Bilquis Everly and Tom King\u2019s award-winning graphic novel Woman of\u00a0 Tomorrow<\/a>,\u00a0the finished product is\u2026not really that, and now the two have taken to explaining some key changes made in the film.<\/p>\n

After defeating Krem of the Yellow Hills\u2019 forces and talking Ruthye out of killing the man who slaughtered her family, Kara goes and finishes him off herself. It\u2019s a sharp divergence from the comic, where Krem spends years imprisoned in the Phantom Zone before he\u2019s freed and a now elderly Ruthye hits him in the face before walking off. Nogueira told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> this change has always been part of her initial pitch for the movie, and one signed off by producers James Gunn and Peter Safran. \u201cWe gotta kill the guy, and we can\u2019t let the little girl do it,\u201d she recalled saying. While stuck writing, she eventually realized Kara\u2019s final lines to Krem would bring everything home: \u2018This is for my dog,\u2019 and \u2018This is for what you did to that little girl\u2019 are the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now back on Earth and living in Metropolis, Supergirl will return<\/a> for 2027\u2019s Man of Tomorrow. To Nogueira, her killing Krem is a way to \u201cdefine herself differently than Superman. She has to say, \u2018I have my own morality and sense of goodness. I don\u2019t have a rule you have\u2014I have my own guidance and the ability to discern when I\u2019m gonna take somebody off the map. I know this is the right thing to do.’\u201d With Lex Luthor<\/a> and Brainiac<\/a> in Tomorrow, and one of them having harmed her dog in\u00a0Superman,\u00a0this might not be the last time Kara gets her hands dirty.<\/p>\n

That she kills Krem is already one of Supergirl\u2019s most divisive moments, and comes before something that\u2019s got folks even more split: a slo-mo sequence where Kara fights Krem\u2019s forces set to a cover of Jimmy Eat World\u2019s \u201cThe Middle<\/a>\u201d by Kelty Greye and KidMotel. When asked about the song by Rolling Stone<\/a>, Nogueira said there were \u201ca lot of options\u201d for a needle drop, with Gillespie saying there were 45\u00a0potential songs set against that scene. \u201cI gotta give James [Gunn, producer] credit for that one,\u201d he said. \u201cThat was probably the biggest discussion, and it was down to the very last week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nogueira revealed that action scene almost had a different song, but was quiet on the runner-up. Instead, Gillespie teased the other candidate was \u201ca remix of a classic, and you almost need to see it as the remix, because the orchestration was what made it so beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n
