Ms. Lauryn Hill<\/a> received the inaugural Living Legend Icon Award at the BET Awards 2026 tonight. To celebrate her big moment at the awards ceremony, a number of musicians paid tribute to the Fugees<\/a> member\u2014including SZA, Doechii, Nas, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah, Tems, Lizzo, Rapsody, Tierra Whack, and more\u2014before Hill ended up performing one of her own songs last minute, too. Artists pulled from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill<\/a>, The Score<\/a>, and other cuts highlighting Hill\u2019s legendary musical run. Among the highlights were SZA and Doechii\u2019s spin on the Fugees\u2019 \u201cReady or Not,\u201d Tierra Whack and Tems\u2019 rendition of \u201cFu-Gee-La,\u201d and Doja Cat\u2019s double duty performing \u201cSuperstar\u201d and, afterwards, duetting \u201cIf I Ruled the World (Imagine That)\u201d with Nas. A particularly touching rendition of \u201cHis Eye Is on the Sparrow\u201d came from the War & Treaty, whose member Tanya Trotter duetted on the song with Hill back in Sister Act 2. Additional performances by Lizzo, YG Marley, Selah, Rapsody, Zion Marley, and Alexia Jayy eventually led to the final number by Queen Latifah and Common, who closed out the segment with a cover of \u201cLost Ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a commercial break, Hill unexpectedly stepped into the role of a performing artist at her own honoring. \u201cI wasn\u2019t even supposed to perform, but I heard somebody wasn\u2019t doing this song,\u201d she said before singing \u201cEx-Factor\u201d with a backing band.<\/p>\n

Hill accepted the trophy from Ice Cube, who talked at length about her influence in the culture at large. \u201cI do this because I want y\u2019all to have everything that I experienced,\u201d she said during her acceptance speech. \u201cI had wonderful parents who loved on me, poured into me, and protected me. Once I realized that not everybody got to have that experience, I felt like it was my duty, my responsibility to share as much love and pour into people as music as I possibly could \u2014 and music was a way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Ms. Lauryn Hill took the stage at the 2026 Grammys<\/a> for a rare televised appearance<\/a>, in which she paid tribute to the late D\u2019Angelo and Roberta Flack. She sang a number of songs by both artists, including her own collaborations (\u201cNothing Even Matters\u201d with D\u2019Angelo) and covers (Flack\u2019s \u201cKilling Me Softly With His Song\u201d). She was joined by a number of artists for the rapidfire medley, including Chaka Khan, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, and Leon Bridges.<\/p>\n
