These modern greats have struck the perfect balance between critical acclaim and their own unique directorial voices, while still maintaining the Midas touch at the box office. However, that list of great modern filmmakers will not be complete without mentioning James Cameron, a filmmaker held in high regard, particularly when it comes to his work in the sci-fi genre. Cameron first established himself within the genre when he directed the first two movies in the Terminator franchise, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and remained a part of the franchise as both a writer and producer.

Cameron is synonymous with mega box office returns, as proven by the staying power of his 1997 film, Titanic, which remains on the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, despite premiering more than 25 years ago. However, one of his biggest assets, and perhaps the work he is best known for, is the legendary sci-fi franchise, Avatar. The Avatar movies take fans on an epic planetary adventure as audiences get to enjoy the sights, sounds, and threats that loom in Pandora. The first Avatar movie would premiere in 2009, and was hailed as a technological marvel that seemed far ahead of its time. Despite being a successful hit, it took years for the sequel to make it to the big screen before Cameron ultimately brought audiences back to Pandora in 2022 with Avatar: The Way of Water. With yet another successful run, the filmmaker provided a much quicker turnaround for Avatar: Fire and Ash, which debuted at the end of 2025.

After being announced during Disney’s Upfront presentation in New York, fans of the franchise were glad when Avatar: Fire and Ash began streaming on Disney+ on June 24. Prior to its arrival, the first two installments in the franchise landed back in the global streaming top 10, paving the way for more domination for the latest sequel, and so it has proven. According to data obtained from FlixPatrol, Avatar: Fire and Ash, another box office juggernaut from Cameron, which has grossed over $1 billion worldwide since opening in theaters in early December last year, has dominated the streaming charts on Disney+. The third straight Avatar movie to clear the billion-dollar mark has found itself in the Top 10 of several nations, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Spain, and the United Kingdom, among a host of others, extending its dominion beyond the big screen.

Collider Exclusive · Sci-Fi Survival Quiz
Which Sci-Fi World Would You Survive?
The Matrix · Mad Max · Blade Runner · Dune · Star Wars

Five universes. So it is no surprise that questions have arisen regarding the prospects of Avatar 4. Before the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron revealed that for Disney to agree to covering the huge costs of the fourth movie, its predecessor would have to be a hit at the box office, and it has proven so despite falling below its predecessors. We seem dead set for a fourth film, but it yet remains without a title, and director Cameron has admitted that he must find a way to make it cheaper and faster, or pass the reins to someone else.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently streaming on Disney+.
