Irish economy moderated to 3.3 per cent in June as global tensions eased and energy prices dropped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the latest barometer of price growth comes as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\"> European Central Bank<\/a> (ECB) chief economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/philip-lane\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/philip-lane\/\">Philip Lane<\/a> warned about knock-on effects from higher energy prices that might take a while to show up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe second-round effect is probably going to take some time,\u201d Lane told Bloomberg Television\u2019s Francine Lacqua.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He also said the ECB would not box itself in on the trajectory of monetary policy, suggesting it was still open to another interest rate hike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) indicated that prices rose at an annualised rate of 3.3 per cent in June, down from a rate of 3.5 per cent in May and an annual increase of 3.2 per cent in the HICP for the euro area for the same period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said energy prices were estimated to have decreased by 1.9 per cent in June but to have risen by 10 per cent over the 12 months to June.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Has the Irish building sector got themselves hooked on Government subsidies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest estimate of price growth comes at a pivotal moment for the global economy with peace efforts between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\">US and Iran <\/a>still ongoing amid sporadic tit-for-tat attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iran\u2019s effective closure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Strait of Hormuz <\/a>earlier in the year halted global shipments of oil and gas through the channel, triggering a sudden surge in energy prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CSO said food prices were estimated to have gone down by 0.3 per cent in June but were up by 0.7 per cent on an annual basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The effect of higher energy prices on food costs is still a major concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Excluding energy and unprocessed food, the underlying HICP for June is estimated to have grown by 2.6 per cent in annual terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eurostat will publish flash estimates of inflation
