{"id":528467,"date":"2026-07-02T00:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T00:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/528467\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T00:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T00:32:14","slug":"experienced-irish-executive-paul-dalton-dies-aged-75-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/528467\/","title":{"rendered":"Experienced Irish executive Paul D\u2019Alton dies aged 75 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Well-known Irish corporate figure Paul D\u2019Alton has died at the age of 75. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Alton\u2019s family confirmed he died in the Blackrock Hospice on June 29th following an illness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During his career, D\u2019Alton held senior roles at large Irish companies including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aer-lingus\/\">Aer Lingus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bank-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bank-of-ireland\/\">Bank of Ireland<\/a> and Waterford Wedgwood, which was behind the Waterford Crystal brand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2020, he was appointed interim chief executive of insurer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fbd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fbd\/\">FBD Holdings<\/a> as it sought a replacement to succeed Fiona Muldoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokeswoman for FBD said he made a big contribution to the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEveryone at FBD Insurance was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former Interim CEO, Paul D\u2019Alton. Paul made a significant contribution to FBD during his time with the business, providing thoughtful leadership and wise counsel,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe was held in great affection by colleagues across the organisation, remembered not only for his professionalism and commitment, but also for his warmth, kindness and generosity of spirit. Our sincere condolences are with Paul\u2019s family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Alton spent three years between 1989 and 1991 as chief financial officer of Aer Lingus before joining Bank of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He led the bank\u2019s finance division for 10 years and exited his role as chief financial officer of the company in 2001 \u201cto pursue a range of business interests\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2004, he became chief financial officer of Waterford Crystal and china maker Waterford Wedgwood. He left a year later to become chief financial officer of a start-up designing a system to measure greenhouse gas emissions called AgCert International.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Alton stepped in briefly as FBD\u2019s interim chief financial officer in 2015 and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/financial-services\/insurer-fbd-names-paul-d-alton-as-interim-chief-executive-1.4216931\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/financial-services\/insurer-fbd-names-paul-d-alton-as-interim-chief-executive-1.4216931\">returned to the company in 2020<\/a> for a short period as chief executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time, chairman Liam Herlihy said that D\u2019Alton was \u201chighly regarded in the investment community and as a former FBD colleague\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Alton is survived by his wife Anne, and children Gavin, Jane and Eve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Well-known Irish corporate figure Paul D\u2019Alton has died at the age of 75.
