Ireland is heading up the EU Council Presidency for the rest of 2026 – which means a hugely complex security operation as EU leaders and officials pay a visit to Cork this week.<\/p>\n
Starting today, Ireland will be at the centre of EU<\/a> decision\u2011making for six months, steering complicated negotiations that shape laws and policy for around 450 million people. The Presidency of the Council of the EU is being launched this week with events across Dublin, Cork and other cities – with a fleet of officials from the EU’s College of Commissioners descending on Leeside on Thursday, flanked by Garda escorts<\/a>.<\/p>\n For Cork city residents, it will mean some traffic interruptions<\/a> – but after two years of planning, Garda\u00ed are aiming to keep disruption to a minimum while keeping security at an all-time high.<\/p>\n A Garda spokesperson explained: “In general, traffic restrictions for the visit will be kept to the minimum required and it is intended that any impact on the public will be localised and minimal. EU Presidency events will be concentrated in the University College Cork campus, Cork City Hall, Tyndall National Institute and Hayfield Manor Hotel.”<\/p>\n The members of the EU’s College of Commissioners will arrive and depart at Cork Airport. Normal operations will continue at Cork Airport at all times, but travelling members of the public should allow additional time to arrive at the airport due to possible temporary traffic restrictions, particularly during the afternoon of Thursday, July 2 and the afternoon of Friday, July 3.<\/p>\n So far, only one long-term traffic measure has been announced for Cork city:<\/p>\n The Gaol Walk between College Road & Western Road will be closed from the afternoon of July 2 until the afternoon of July 3.<\/p>\n
