Inspired by Andy Warhol\u2019s<\/a> 1975 statement that \u2018making money is art,\u2019 The Last Dollar uses money itself as its medium. The work consists of a pile of US one-dollar bills placed on the floor, gradually changing shape as new bills are added. The project began on June 25th, 2026, with an initial contribution of 100 one-dollar bills by QSTN?MRK. Since then, the sculpture<\/a> has been built entirely through public participation.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Each participant adds cash to the pile and becomes a co-author of the artwork. As the bills fall, they alter the form of the sculpture in unpredictable ways. The participant\u2019s name appears on the live stream, and until another contribution is made, they hold the title of \u2018The Last Dollar.\u2019 Every contribution is timestamped, every bill remains part of the installation<\/a>, and every participant is recorded in the project\u2019s timeline. Contributors also receive a digital Certificate of Authorship documenting their participation.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Last Dollar digital artwork\u00a0Evolves Through Every Contribution<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The sculpture is operated through a custom-built ATM that dispenses one-dollar bills onto the floor. Participants can contribute the equivalent of $1, $10, $20, $50, or $100, with the machine releasing the corresponding number of individual bills. A single dollar is enough to become \u2018The Last Dollar,\u2019 while larger contributions release multiple bills simultaneously, reshaping the pile through their accumulation.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n A recurring figure known as the Janitor periodically enters the installation to sweep, fold the bills by hand, reshape the pile, and refill the ATM. These maintenance actions form part of the ongoing operation of the work.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The digital installation<\/a>, conceived by art collective<\/a> QSTN?MRK, continues to exist only through ongoing participation, making its duration open-ended.
