England have booked their place in the last-16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, surviving a scare to overcome DR Congo on a 2-1 scoreline in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

DR Congo took the lead after minutes, with Brian Cipenga scoring the game’s opening goal thanks to some poor goalkeeping from Jordan Pickford.<\/p>\n

England would push hard for an equaliser over the remainder of the first half, although they were kept at bay thanks to some brilliant goalkeeping from Lionel Mpasi.<\/p>\n

Thomas Tuchel’s side would also have a penalty claim waived away just before the interval, with Harry Kane going down under minimal contact<\/a> in the box.<\/p>\n

England were up until the hydration break in the second half, but they would manage to get back on level terms soon after the game restarted. Kane was the man to get the goal with a strong header.<\/p>\n

England will now face hosts Mexico in the last-16 on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

England facing nightmare scenario against Mexico<\/p>\n

That game against Mexico will be a difficult one for England in more ways than one. The hosts have never lost a World Cup fixture in their home stadium, going ten matches unbeaten.<\/p>\n

Not only will the Azteca have a hostile atmosphere, the conditions will also be difficult to adapt to. Mexico City sits roughly 2,200 metres above sea level, meaning altitude will be a real factor for a side who are not used to playing in such an environment.<\/p>\n

Speaking on RT\u00c9, Kevin Doyle brought up his own experience as a player in the MLS with the Colorado Rapids to sum up how difficult it would be for England in that game.<\/p>\n

I’ve played at altitude in America with Colorado. It’s tough work, it was tough work for me for more than a few days anyway I can tell you!<\/p>\n

It hits you hard. Mexico City is a lot higher than there. On top of that you have the temperature, it’s not a closed stadium like it was today in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

There was a lot of energy spent there tonight by a lot of players, so it will be a really hard tough game for them.<\/p>\n

It’s not going to be like tonight, I think it will be really difficult.<\/p>\n

That game will kick off at 1am on Monday morning Irish time.<\/p>\n

Mexico are sure to provide a stern test in the next round, especially in front of their home crowd at the Azteca. That fixture will also see England play at altitude for the first time in this tournament.<\/p>\n

They will certainly need to improve their performance from this game against one of the form teams in the tournament up to this point.<\/p>\n

In saying that, as was shown this evening, anything is possible when Harry Kane can produce moments of magic like that when his team need him.<\/p>\n
