Glasgow indie rockers the Yummy Fur were a going concern for most of the ’90s, but they called it quits in 1999, the same year keyboardist Mark Gibbons died by suicide. Two members of the band, Alex Kapranos and Paul Thomson, went on to co-found Franz Ferdinand, which added Yummy Fur guitarist Dino Bardot many years later. (Another noteworthy connection: Lawrence Worthington, who drummed for the Yummy Fur before Thomson, went on to play in the Male Nurse and Country Teasers.)<\/p>\n

Although frontman John McKeown, who later led the 1990s, reunited a version of the Yummy Fur for an American tour in 2010, the band hasn’t released new music since 1998. That’s about to change. A new LP, Everybody Talks About The Weather, is coming in September via Upset The Rhythm. The core trio of McKeown, Thomson, and Brian MacDougall recorded the album. <\/p>\n

The Yummy Fur are playing some UK shows to promote the record, and lead single “Unity Over Europe” is out today. It’s powered by a heavy, snarling groove and piercing high-pitched guitar, like the Pixies if they recorded for AmRep, or Mclusky if they had more of a suave Kapranos-esque singer. (Kapranos does not seem to be involved in this reunion, but based on the sound of McKeown’s vocals, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Franz Ferdinand frontman was influenced by his former bandmate.)<\/p>\n

A note from the band:<\/p>\n

“Unity Over Europe” was the first song we came up with when we started thinking about putting some new songs into the set to escape the end-of-the-pier vibe of just performing the hits. It’s conceived as a two-act play with three main characters: Diana, Unity and Nancy, the Mitford Sisters. Act One finds them trapped in a flat two-dimensional Francis Bacon triptych spinning in space-time much like the excellent villains in Superman 2. In the second act Unity is placed in the nose cone of the V2 rocket and fired from Peenem\u00fcnde into London, a punishment in homage to the final death parabola of Pynchon’s Rainbow.<\/p>\n
