The Amazon<\/a> fulfilment centre on the outskirts of Dublin<\/a> only grinds to a stop twice a year – on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.<\/p>\n

Apart from that, it\u2019s all systems go, around the clock, both day and night. The enormous warehouse is Ireland\u2019s only fulfilment centre, and bosses at the e-commerce giant said it\u2019s only going to get bigger.<\/p>\n

The building currently occupies approximately 630,000 square feet of floor space in Baldonnel, west Dublin – making it one of the largest in Ireland.<\/p>\n

It is filled to the brim with millions of items, including everything from DIY tools to books to kitchen appliances – hundreds of thousands of which can be delivered within 24 hours.<\/p>\n

To see all the stock-filled rows and aisles, a person would need to cover a staggering 12.5 km on foot. The Irish Mirror<\/a> was given a behind-the-scenes look at what happens once a customer clicks order on Amazon. We saw how items are stored, picked, and packaged move through the highly automated facility – before they are sorted for delivery.<\/p>\n

Some are then handed over to An Post<\/a>, while others head to more local delivery stations before being loaded on Amazon vans. Once an item is packed, a temporary barcode is applied to the box before it\u2019s placed on a conveyor belt. A laser-powered machine then reads the barcode and uses air pressure to slap a label on the box.<\/p>\n

Meaning the person who packs the box doesn\u2019t know who the parcel is for or where it is going, while those working on the label machine don\u2019t know what\u2019s inside.<\/p>\n

Marcus Mallon, who is the Site Lead at Amazon, said this is to protect the customer\u2019s privacy. Up to 6,800 packages are labelled every single hour.<\/p>\n

He said some of the most popular items on Amazon include books, but stressed that Amazon Firesticks and baby wipes have been flying off the shelves.<\/p>\n

Mr Mallon also said dehumidifiers were a particular favourite of Irish consumers and revealed orders for inflatable swimming pools soared during the sizzling hot weather last week.<\/p>\n

He said Amazon used a complex algorithm to predict which items should be sent to which fulfilment sites around the world ahead of an expected surge in demand.<\/p>\n

Mr Mallon said this allows Amazon to reduce delivery times for items customers want. The e-commerce expert also said that as more customers use Amazon, it will only get better.<\/p>\n

Amazon bosses are also urging punters to switch from the UK version of the site to the Irish one, which launched in March 2025, to avoid the new \u20ac3 customs charge per item for products from outside the European Union, which came into force on July 1.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Mr Mallon explained: “The move to Amazon.ie<\/a> is a logical approach to avoid those EU customs fees.”<\/p>\n

When asked about Amazon\u2019s presence in Ireland, Mr Mallon said: “(Our) presence is clearly defined by our grey vans on the roads and also with our business partners and last-mile distribution through An Post.<\/p>\n

“We have a number of sites throughout the country and, in conjunction with An Post, deliver thousands and thousands of packages every day to customers around Ireland.”<\/p>\n

The Dublin fulfilment centre opened in 2022. In total, around 700 people work there, with 200 jobs created in 2026 alone.<\/p>\n

Amazon said they are always investing in Ireland. Since 2010, they have injected more than \u20ac25 billion in the country – \u20ac3 billion of which was last year.<\/p>\n

In total, they employ more than 6,500 people. A spokesman said: “Amazon\u2019s commitment to Ireland continues to grow. In 2025 alone, Amazon invested more than \u20ac3 billion in Ireland, including the launch of Amazon.ie, as well as infrastructure investments and compensation to our employees.”<\/p>\n

They added: “Amazon employs around \u20ac6,500 people across Ireland, with an extended workforce of 10,000 people working in our corporate and operations sites. As our operations grow, so too does the demand for local suppliers, service providers, and skilled workers across the country.<\/p>\n

“As a significant employer in Ireland, we provide a range of roles from entry-level positions to highly skilled jobs, including operations managers, data engineers, film producers and finance professionals.”<\/p>\n
